the book is excellent because it points out once and for all that ...
By Jim Curry
As children we were taught a particular way to manage the court. We were supposed to run to where the ball would show up (quite soon, actually), stop, do a classical swing, almost certainly from a fully closed position, follow through, and then start the recovery toward the center of the court. We were told never to run through our volleys. You stop, set, and either stroke or punch. As kids, we didn't always listen to the coach. Sometimes we ran through our volleys and sometimes we didn't get stopped before we had to hit the ball back. Those times weren't disastrous. They turned out well, on many occasions. Only because of constant insistence of authority figures did we finally get to "do it right." The author correctly points out that the top pros today actively and intentionally use their forward momentum on return of serve and volley. They actively use the momentum of their own body motion, whether it is forward or backward or sideways, for ground strokes. If they CAN conveniently move forward through the ball, they almost always choose to do that. So, the book is excellent because it points out once and for all that the old classical teaching was just mistaken, as our bodies told us when we were kids. Running through volleys isn't good, but stopping dead is worse. Controlled movement is best. So, I think the book is very insightful and quite useful. I think its graphics could be improved, and that would be very helpful. Its writing style is very redundant, and it gets tiresome having the "tennis gods" phrase repeated endlessly. But the book has very good and insightful content. The information within it could have been illustrated better or, if not, the book could have been made quite a lot shorter.

Good information, but needs serious editing.
By H. T. Johnson
There is good information in this book. It is worth reading. It has great descriptions of movement at the pro level. It even has suggestions for how to practice many of the moves. There is no substitute for actually working this out on the court, preferably with a coach, but half the battle is having the correct information so that the time you spend on court is profitable.
I had two problems with this book.
1) It could really benefit from an editor. On almost every page you will find grammatical errors, misspelled words, or missing words. This really gets in the way. You have to stop and try to figure out what the author's intent was. Sometimes, changing the spelling of a word makes the passage make sense. Sometimes you have to guess the missing word.
2) it uses sequences of photos to demonstrate technique. These are postage stamp size and difficult to see. Sometimes they are not labeled. The text of the book might say that here we see Roddick and someone else, or we see two women players, and one is using correct technique and the other is not. Unfortunately, the postage stamp sized photos make it difficult to see which one is Roddick and which one is the other guy. I had to carefully read the text, figure out which picture seemed to demonstrate the most correct motion, and then infer that the other line of photos was Roddick. This should be clearly labeled so I don't have to guess. They also use multiple exposure photos to demonstrate technique. The photos are small and it is hard to tell the sequence of exposures.
Note: I read this in the Kindle Version.

a must have book for any true tennis player or coach looking to improve their game.
By Kyle LaCroix
This book covers the most important yet often overlooked skill that all great tennis players possess...great footwork.
This book should be required reading for players and coaches looking to take their games and students games to the next level.
Every great stroke depends on great footwork, it's no coincidence that the greatest players of all time also happen to be some of the fastest, most explosive movers in history.
Do yourself or your students a favor and get this book.
