Useful by-products

Of course the book is disfigured by its own preposterous reliance on foolish theories, that will find themselves in the dustbin of history within a generation or two. Nevertheless Parker is indeed a careful reader, even though her comprehension is undermined by things she perceives wrongly as certainties about Shakespeare. Her naive acceptance of the dating of the plays is as predictable as it is pitiable. But one can derive some useful ideas from her hard work, even though they will be unintended by the author.

About the Author
Ben Counter is one of Black Library’s most popular Warhammer 40,000 authors, with two Horus Heresy novels to his name – Galaxy in Flames and Battle for the Abyss. He is the author of the Soul Drinkers series and The Grey Knights Omnibus. For Space Marine Battles, he has written the novels The World Engine and Malodrax, and has turned his attention to the Space Wolves with the novella Arjac Rockfist: Anvil of Fenris and a number of short stories. He is a fanatical painter of miniatures, a pursuit which has won him his most prized possession: a prestigious Golden Demon award. He lives in Portsmouth, England.

this works a lot better that you would think it would

Standard 40K Grimdark war porn with an original twist followed by a standard 40k gimmick. The Necrons make a Death Star (interestingly described, but yeah, it's a Death Star). A B-List Space Marines Chapter crash lands on it in a 'no doubt about it' suicide mission to destroy it (also an interesting idea but the decision by the Chapter Master to do so seems a little rushed and could have been gone into in a little more detail). All this happens within the first 20 pages of the story. What separates it from the rest of the pack is the "who's corpse are they retrieving these memories from" narrative device and the unknown until the last few pages, reason behind this particular SM Chapters need to save the next planet in the Death Stars trajectory.

Interesting characters. The backstory for the Chapter is that their aspirants are chosen from a single home-world that has a seemingly Middle Eastern/Asian inspired Royalty/Caste system (think Dune) that plays heavily into how they act and react to each other (even though they are sworn to disavow all aspects of their former lives during the SM conversion.) The Necrons are a combination of Pre and Post Matt Ward fluff tinkering. They are mostly mindless killing machines save for the leaders that have maintained their Necrontyr personalities and actually bark insults and taunts at their enemies, this works a lot better that you would think it would.

The only problem is the usual 40K "Deus ex Machina" (or in this case 'Deus ex C'Tan") ending that quickly ties things up too neatly yet leaves the door open for another conflict with the very thing they released to save themselves. This worked wonderfully (and tragically) in Eisenhorn, but the the idea has been beaten to death by subsequent Black Library 40k novels.

worth it!

Great book. the Astral Knights make a desperate assault on a necron "Death Star" like world called the world engine by crashing a ship with their whole chapter on to its surface.

I have always enjoyed seeing the space marines fighting the necrons as it is one of the few races in the 41 millennium that seem to out match them particularly in this one where they don't even now who the necrons are or anything about them before they got to the surface. they did not even know if they would survive the crash to the surface or if sending their whole chapter to certain death will even do any good.

the one problem I have with this story is there was not much build up to the coming up with the plan to crash the ship. just a few pages in and they are making their death run at the world engine. this gets explained more latter in the book but missing that build up was still a disappointment to me.

also there are breaks from the main story to read notes from an Inquisitorial agent who is digging out the memories of a of the space marine recovered from the battle with the world engine. which are weird but get very intriguing as the book goes on.

The Second Edition resolves several open issues and misunderstandings that have emerged since the original edition. The new edition includes new proofs of effectiveness, substantial revisions of statistical estimation, extensive discussion of long-short optimization, and new tools for dealing with estimation error in applications and enhancing computational efficiency. RE optimization is shown to be a Bayesian-based generalization and enhancement of Markowitz's solution. RE technology corrects many current practices that may adversely impact the investment value of trillions of dollars under current asset management. RE optimization technology may also be useful in other financial optimizations and more generally in multivariate estimation contexts of information uncertainty with Bayesian linear constraints.

Michaud and Michaud's new book includes numerous additional proposals to enhance investment value including Stein and Bayesian methods for improved input estimation, the use of portfolio priors, and an economic perspective for asset-liability optimization. Applications include investment policy, asset allocation, and equity portfolio optimization. A simple global asset allocation problem illustrates portfolio optimization techniques. A final chapter includes practical advice for avoiding simple portfolio design errors.

About the Author

Richard O. Michaud is President and Chief Investment Officer at New Frontier Advisors. His research and consulting has focused on asset allocation, investment strategies, global investment management, optimization, stock valuation, portfolio analysis, and trading costs. He is co-inventor and patentee of Resampled Efficiency optimization. He earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Boston University and taught investment management at Columbia University.

Robert O. Michaud, the co-inventor of the patented portfolio optimization processes, is the Managing Director of Research and Development at New Frontier Advisors. Mr. Michaud holds a Masters in Mathematics from Boston University and pursued a Ph.D. in finance from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles before joining NFA. His research interests include risk models, empirical asset pricing, and international finance.

Not for the asset allocation user (vs. creator)

I would agree with the comments of the first 2 reviewers. That is, the book is honest, concise and thorough in addressing the pitfalls of using Mean-Variance optimization techniques for finding optimum asset allocations (i.e., minimum risk for given expected return). However, if you don't do your own asset allocation calculations (i.e., process historical trends to find the "efficient frontier") the only value of the book is to make you aware of the issues around using Markowitz mean-variance techniques and, therefore, be questioning of any asset allocation models you come across. In other words, for the user (vs. creator) of asset allocation models be aware that if the creator wasn't careful in his statistical techniques the models could be wrong. Also, what I also got out of the book was, in many cases, rebalancing of a portfolio may not be needed as frequently as many suppose as the efficient frontier is more of a cloud then a line.

Actually the author does lead a consulting firm, as possibly conjectured by the last reviewer. No wonder his lack of clarity in the how-to phase.

For interested readers, Scherer has a good explanation of how resampling actually works. He also claims, in my view rightly, that Bayesian optimization is much better ... pity that commercial software is not as readily available as in standard portfolio optimization.

Anyway, overall I agree with the judgments of earlier reviews: the book is good as a reminder of the weaknesses in standard optimization, but the solutions it proposes are suboptimal. Read Scherer instead for theory, although implementation isn't any easier and price is even worse.

Professor Gerard Delanty is Professor of Sociology and Social & Political Thought at the University of Sussex. He is the author of twelve books and editor of seven, including Handbook of Contemporary European Social Theory (Routledge, 2006). His most recent publication is The Cosmopolitan Imagination: The Social Theory Renewal of Critical Social Theory (Cambridge University Press, 2009).

Slave-insurrections

This text by American Thomas Wentworth Higginson contains five chapters of his 'Travellers and Outlaws' and is commonly referred to as 'Black Rebellion Five Slave Revolts'. This book was first published in 1889 and is in the public domain. The Kindle edition has 69 pages/1546 locations and can be read in one evening.

The author was a unitarian minister, soldier, abolitionist and author who lived from 1823-1911. Higginson spent much of his live fighting for the rights of freed slaves, women and labourers. This collection contains 5 true accounts of insurrections by black slaves in the Americas. There is a biography at the end of this volume. This book is wellwritten, well researched and reliable. It tells about a sad and embarrasing chapter in history we must not forget. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in black history, US-history, history of slavery or in history in general.

THE MAROONS OF JAMAICA (slave revolt on the caribbean island of Jamaica)

Denmark Vesey had come very near figuring as a revolutionist in Hayti,
instead of South Carolina. Capt. Vesey, an old resident of Charleston,
commanded a ship that traded between St. Thomas and Cape Français, during
our Revolutionary War, in the slave-transportation line. In the year 1781
he took on board a cargo of three hundred and ninety slaves, and sailed
for the Cape. On the passage, he and his officers were much attracted by
the beauty and intelligence of a boy of fourteen, whom they unanimously
adopted into the cabin as a pet. They gave him new clothes, and a new
name, Télémaque, which was afterwards gradually corrupted into Telmak and
Denmark. They amused themselves with him until their arrival at Cape
Français, and then, "having no use for the boy," sold their pet as if he
had been a macaw or a monkey.

Not enough like it

A reasonable recollection on revolts during the slave trade period. Based on/from a Europeans point of view it is relatively well written and moderate in opinion. Not what I would have expected from an New or Old world person giving an account of the activity of the time. Found it refreshing considering how worried I was about reading a subject so close to my own heart.

Even more daunting - what if my heroine had been born in this land, been moved to and grown up in Australia for her own safety, then not only had to return to this part of the world, but had the responsibility of ruling a desert nation? Enter Sabrina (born Sabihah, Crown Princess of Rajia).With all she had to face, Sabrina would need some heavy-weight political support and who better to support her than the Prince from a neighbouring land who she had once adored from afar? I LOVED It!

I haven't enjoyed a sheikh story in a long time like I LOVED this story. It's got EVERYTHING that makes a good romance. I loved the fact the heroine was no push over. In fact the hero Prince was more than a little astounded at her toughness & self assredness. In short, she's NOTHING like the women he usually associates with! You will LOVE this book!

One Not To Be Missed

Alyssa J Montgomery writes stories that are hard to put down they are passionate and emotional and will have you turning the pages and falling for the hero and heroine and this one is such a great story it will have you travelling from The Middle East to Australia and will keep you smiling.

Sabrina St George has been living in Australia for many years with her nanny Helen St George she is now a school teacher in the country and loves her life and her job yes she knows there is more to her life but a lot of years have passed since she left her home country and no one has ever come for her so she has put it all behind her and has become a strong and caring teacher and person that is until she makes the headlines for her bravery and everything will change including putting her in danger.

Khalid Ul-Haq grew up as the spare so to speak in his country of Turastan he became known as the polo playboy and was enjoying life but when tragedy strikes and he becomes the crown prince responsibilities fall to his shoulders but there is also a fair amount of guilt but he has come to terms with the fact that he must marry and he has chosen a bride but then his father informs him that they have discovered the true heir to the throne of Rhajia and that Khalid will need to bring her home and this turns Khalid's life upside down.

I loved this story from start to finish as danger and the growing spark between Sabrina and Khalid gets stronger Khalid has so much to come to terms with and the growing need to protect and get closer to the ever strong willed Sabrina and to help her come to terms with helping her to run her true country. This is a story that will keep you smiling as both Sabrina and Khalid fall under each others spells and open up and give into the love and passion that grows between them I highly recommend this one

“Art take on many forms.” This book simply contains the various forms of sketching and doodle patterns in a very convincing manner. There are many types of drawing and shading explained which at first looks difficult but later it is really easy to perform. Although this book does not contain everything about drawing related to sketches and doodle patterns but for the beginners, they worth it. Some of the topics related to curves, zen doodle on fabric are really interesting. One more thing to note down is this sketch and doodles are not only art proven but also helpful in hospitals and health care centers. There are many points listed in the book relating to the patterns which can be useful and easy to learn.

Drawing - Doodling - Zen Doodling Guide

I didn't understand what my big sister was doing all these years. In my mind she was just "scrabbling" or I should say "Doodling". But really and truly she had a set pattern and structure to how she was drawing and this book made me understand the difference. Doodling: is a random design. It has no rules. You simply draw down shapes and then fill them in with anything that you heart desires. Thus doodling is freeform. While Zen Doodling: are lines drawn to create the original strings or main lines that form a pattern. Then into each area of the pattern, different patterns are introduced which are structured and very organized. This is what makes the difference and it is an important difference because the discipline that is introduced with Zen doodle is what makes it so concentrated and therapeutic. Great guide I must say.
