I love her idea that "...underneath all the nothings we talk about - there is something much deeper needing to be said." It's so very true. We automatically answer fine or pretty good, or we expect others to answer the same. But what are we really thing? Feeling? 

With chapters titled Wrinkly Crinkly, Ugly Shoes, I'm A Shorty, and Me? A Whimp?, just to name a few, I found myself in her words over and over again. It was as though author Seedorf had written this book (her column) based on my life. I'm sure you'll find yourself on these wonderful pages too.

I have written my column Something About Nothing since 2006. My readers have asked for the columns in a book and this is the first volume. I realized it was needed when readers were looking up columns and cutting and pasting and running them off in book form to give to others when they needed a lift or inspiration.

In every nothing that we speak we leave something unsaid. We talk about things that don't matter and we miss the moments of friendship that do. This book is meant to be read over time to uplift and inspire. I hope it touches your heart.

Better Late Than Never

I won this book shortly after following Julie on her Facebook page. She asked if I could give her a review when I was done. That was many months ago, so I hope she didn't give up on me.
Part of the reason this took so long was because of how much I enjoyed it. "How could that be?" You may ask, "Why wouldn't you read it right up if you liked it?" Well, it was because I didn't want it to end. It was just so great.
This is a collection of Julie's articles she put together in one book. I didn't realize this at first. All I knew was the title, and I thought the cover looked pretty great. After reading the first few segments, I thought, "Gee, this sounds like it should be a blog, not a book."
Then I realized it basically was just that. I'd put it down and pick it up to treat myself to a few yummy tidbits of Julie's life. You see, she writes about herself; her thoughts, her experiences, her feelings. I felt like I was getting to know her slowly as the book unwound.
I loved her honesty and thought process. She is forthright in her writing, and admits she's not always perfect, including her writing. She accepts many things about others, and hopes that they do the same for her. She treats people with the respect and kindness she would like to be treated with. If she's anything like her articles, we could definitely be friends.
Many times I thought of my parents when I read her articles. I figured she must be around their generation. Yet I also related to her. She talked about things about her youth and past, but didn't make me, the reader feel lost being from a different time. She brought me right in with her. My dad has a knack for that as well, so I appreciated her story telling very much.
Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read tidbits. They are funny, fun, whimsical, kind, thoughtful and provoking at times. Well worth the read.

What an enjoyable collection of 'nothings!' Many of us have experienced the same joys and disappointments in our lives but most of us never write them down. Julie Seedorf has a wonderful collection of everyday events that add up to many hours of laughter and memories. Her memories become ours. Thank you for putting all these together for us to read!

Calling All "Out of the Box" Thinkers

In their book, Systemic Leadership--Enriching the Meaning of Our Work, Allen and Cherrey pose the question: "Would the CEO of the Internet please stand up?" With that question, the authors embark on an intellectual and practical inquiry about the future of leadership in higher education and organizations. Their work suggests that our traditional, hierarchical processes and structures that many of our organizations currently operate with are no longer applicable. Allen and Cherrey propose that with the current "Networked Knowledge Era" that exists today, we need to look at and adapt to new ways of leading, influencing change and learning in our organizations. By integrating these new ways of doing our work, the authors propose,we will enhance the meaning of our work and contribute to the common good of our organizations. The authors set the stage by describing the shift from the industrial era to the knowledge based era. This shift requires us to look at a networked orientation as opposed to a hierarchical one in the management of our organizations. In our knowledge based era of today, effective leaders in an organization will require the development of systemic thinking. This will involve new ways of relating with those we lead which include the ability to create and foster relationships across the boundaries of our institutions and between our institution and the community. Systemic leaders' new ways of influencing change involve viewing realities and expectations in the organization as more organic and less mechanistic. This view implies understanding how the dynamics of a network function and where the key points of influence are in the system. Allen and Cherrey describe eleven individual and organizational capacities needed for the practice of systemic leadership. Applying these capacities and the views of systemic thinking, we will be able to transform ourselves and the organizations in which we work. Thought provoking questions are provided at the end of each chapter and the authors create imaginative and innovative examples to characterize their ideas. The book designs for us a unique way of looking at the future of our organizations and provides us with creative strategies to lead in our dynamic and chaotic organizations. Although the book is focused on college student affairs administrators, the ideas are very much applicable to business and corporate managers, non-profit administrators and anyone who wants to have a better understanding of the complexities of organizations in the 21st century. A must read for those who embrace cutting edge idesa and for innovative thinkers.

BEYOND classic!!

PAROLES is the book I've most given. Every time I buy a copy I only keep it for so long until I give it to someone, because in my humble opinion everyone should read a little Jacques Prevert sometimes. And all his facets are in this collection. The poet, the child, the activist, the human being who lived through WWII in France.... And I don't really get poetry, in general.
I've recently found it translated in Spanish, so I can enlighten a whole new bunch of friends. Do need to look for the English translation...

Clean New Adult Romance

Having a game plan really helps with a football game and it can't hurt to make one for a potential romance. Just ask TyAnne. She really knows her stuff where football is concerned and when she learns there's an empty seat in a football coaching class at BYU that the star quarterback, Anthony "Rocket" Rogers, is taking, she can't resist signing up and taking a shot at getting to know him.

Ty is completely herself, which is refreshing to Anthony. Her football knowledge catches his attention and her sweet, spunky, selfless personality keeps it, which scares him, as he's not looking for a relationship. Her motives start out a little fan girl, but they quickly change. Ty is loyal to her family, friendly to all, and constantly thinks about being kind, even to her stalker. The whole creepy stalker element added a lot to the story, as well giving the reader a deeper glance into the characters relationships.

Rocket is a star and has the attitude that he can love 'em and leave 'em. The growth that he goes through throughout the story is natural and one can't help but fall for him, right alongside Ty. He's just the right amount of possessive and is very protective, especially to those he really cares about. I love his relationship with his sister and with his football buddies, who were also great men. I would LOVE a story about some of those guys.

I really can't say enough good about this book--it has all the elements that I love and isn't cheesy or cliche. The clean romance really had me swooning--so many romantic moments--and the struggles the characters fought to overcome really drove the story. Everything was propelled and tied up in such a way that I couldn't put it down!

Content: mild romance (kissing); no language; very mild violence (stalking, threats of beating up, etc); mild religious elements (mentioned church and BYU, but no preaching). Clean!

Go Team! A fun and enjoyable book by Ranee S. Clark.

Growing up my dad refereed college football, and now he does the instant replay for the Big 12, so football has always been a huge part of my life. I honestly think that is why I liked this book so much, I already had an appreciation for the game, but of course the book itself that had me eagerly turning pages. Playing for Keeps is highly enjoyable. Ty is an amazing girl who I liked from the first page. I loved how she was herself from the start, and even though she took friendly advice from her friend, she still kept her head. Ty is the type of girl that shines kindness and radiance, and I loved her relationship with her brothers. Anthony was a mystery to me at first, don't get me wrong, I loved when he was around and how he reacted to Ty. Especially how he would react to how other guys reacted to Ty. I really enjoyed the point of view switches with Anthony and Ty. It was the perfect way to get to know Anthony and his friends (who I loved too.) I loved how Anthony was with them, and especially his sister and family. There were so many fun moments in this book. It is full of amazing kisses, humor, and kindness. GO TEAM!

5 out of 5 stars. I can't wait for more from this author! I hear she is working on follow up stories for the other guys in this book. Yay!

I like what the author did with this story

I like what the author did with this story. I struggled with it initially because I'm not a BYU fan, but after awhile I was able to get over what team this was about and just enjoy the story. The fan worship of Anthony, the QB, felt very realistic. I did not like him. He was conceited and a player which made me disrespect him immensely. It took awhile for me to warm up to him, but I felt that he grew and became a better person throughout the story.

I liked TyAnne, the main female character, a lot. She seemed like a good person in many ways. It was a little hard to understand how she was still interested in Anthony knowing he was a player. But she was able to learn more about the real guy, and her example and caring made him better.

I also liked how this wasn't just a standard romance with the big issue stemming from lack of communication. The inclusion of Dylan added an interesting twist, albeit creepy. I really liked the friendships that were formed in the story and the protection that was offered because of it.

Herding horses and learning about life

H.L. Davis was born in Douglas County, Oregon (he died in 1962), and this novel is set in the Middle Columbia River region. It concerns the aftereffects of a murder in which two men, the narrator and Old Hendricks, share time together while herding horses. Hendricks has experienced quite a bit during his long life, and he imparts some of that hard-won knowledge to the younger narrator.

Basically it's all about being honest and true to yourself and facing up to responsibility: "There's things you can't buy out of with money, no matter how much of it you've got. There's things you can't ride away from and be shut of, no matter how hard you whip. You've got to face 'em out for yourself, all the way to the end." Those are Hendricks's words and they sum up his character.

Davis's forte as a novelist is his style: his characters are tough, honest men, and so is his writing style. His sentences are forceful and direct; they feel chiselled more than penned. And he shows a great respect for the country, the Northwest in particular, where many of his books take place. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize with his novel HONEY IN THE HORN, Davis was one of our better regional novelists.

The Real West: "Winds of Morning" by H.L. Davis

This is a western in the true sense: it tells a captivating story of love, murder and redemption set in eastern Oregon in the 1920's. The author knows his stuff and loves the land he writes about. This could be considered a romance, but it has a gritty reality and a true feel for the times and people of the west. For instance, how often have you seen the American cowboy portrayed carrying a sack of rocks to throw at the horses he is herding? Not romantic, but probably true to life. Other details ring true, from the authors huge knowledge of the flora and fauna of the country, to his extensive knowledge of firearms. This is a very well written book by a pulitzer prize winning author at the top of his game. Too bad H.L. Davis was not more appreciated in his time.

An author to discover

I recently re-read this book and liked it less well the second time. It's a moderately entertaining story about a young lawman, an older man with a complex history, a native American friend of the older man, and the older man's daughter. There is an empathetic late-frontier Oregon ambience which I like, and some fairly good character development.

The important thing is to discover this author's best writing and be spared the worst. Buy especially the Collected Essays and Short Stories collection by the University of Idaho Press. Do NOT buy Honey in the Horn!

Davis fans will find his traits demonstrated in Winds of Morning: long sentences, rich descriptions of nature--both the beautiful and the blighted, minor characters that are humorous caricatures, major characters that are empathetic and complex, and rich descriptions of place and history.

This is a little-known and under-appreciated author whose works are not of even quality. Following is my list of his works that I've read, in order of my esteem from highest to lowest.

1. The Homestead Orchard--humorous, sad, joyous, beautifully crafted short story about a father and ex-con son.
2. Old Man Isbell's Wife--humorous, exceedingly poignant short story about an aging cowboy and his younger wife
3. Bench Squatters--poignant short story about a single dad and his kids
4. Flying Switch--action-packed hilarious short story about a runaway train
5. Open Winter--sweet & realistic short story about moving a herd of horses
6. Harp of a Thousand Strings--somewhat saga-like novel of the French Revolution related to the American experience
7. Winds Of Morning--novel about a young lawman investigating a crime
8. Several other short stories--some saga-like (with Davis, saga-like tends to mean it's boring)
9. The Distant Music--saga-like novel of an Oregon family's generations
10. Beulah Land--saga-like novel of America's westward movement
11. All of Davis's essays--not profound but they reveal Davis's thinking
12. The Kettle of Fire--a fictional legend that doesn't really work
13. Honey in the Horn--spare yourself! Saga-like, overlong, random, Pulitzer-prize winning, historically wildly inaccurate, pointless novel of Oregon history

To access the short stories, get a copy of his Collected Essays and Short Stories, published by the University of Idaho Press. Even better, if you can find it at a reasonable price, buy a copy of Davis's short story collection, Team Bells Woke Me (currently the best Amazon Marketplace price is $19.21, but this gets you Bench Squatters, Flying Switch, and some other lesser pieces not in the Collected Essays and Short Stories).
