Another Winner

Every page of this book is competitive gold. The book beautifully elaborates on the thinking processes that B2B companies use to gain competitive advantage in an ever-tightening market. It will help company leaders counter unproductive behavior, and function in highly competitive industries.
Generally, I tend to rate business books on how well they help me understand the business and industry I work in, and using those guidelines , I found this book to be extremely valuable. There are many original, great ideas presented in this book which stand alone on their own merit . However, Pugh and Bacon also build upon their previous book, Winning Behavior, which showed the paradox that well managed companies, like the Men's Warehouse, have built successful business models that listen to customers and employ behavioral differentiation, and yet are not emulated by their competition.
The authors draw on a large body of case histories and business theory to present a fresh and compelling case, reminiscent of Pugh's earlier work in Proposing to Win, which has helped me a great deal. This work differs from most business books by establishing a model, and then making innovative predictions based on that model. For that reason alone, it is more valuable than the typical management book, which simply documents what was successful elsewhere, without a real analysis as to the reasons and limitations of this success.

Too much chess analogy

I love the book, Winning Behavior, but this one is disappointing. The authors spent 6 chapters or 170 pages on chess analogy: on Opening Game, Early Middle Game, Mid Middle Game, Late Middle Game, End Game. Trust me, I am a chess player and love it. It still wears on me after a couple chapers. The same contents started to repeat. This book might be beneficial for a sales people, but this is a tough read.

About the Author
Roger R. Hock, PhD, is a professor of psychology and human sexuality at Mendocino College in northern California. He received his MA in Psychology from San Diego State University and his PhD in Psychology from the University of California at San Diego. He is also the author of Forty Studies that Changed Psychology: Explorations into the History of Psychological Research (Pearson, 2012) and coauthor (with Meg Kennedy Dugan) of It’s My Life Now: Starting over after an Abusive Relationship or Domestic Violence (Routledge, 2006), and (with Amy Marin) Psychology, a digital introductory psychology textbook from Pearson Education.

Dr. Hock has been teaching psychology and human sexuality for over twenty-five years. Human Sexuality is his favorite class to teach and is consistently one of the most popular among students. He believes that Human Sexuality is an essential course for college students because the topics covered are fundamental to our lives and our identities as humans. He asserts that the Human Sexuality course should be a requirement for all undergraduate college and university students. Why? Because the material in this course touches everyone, in countless ways, throughout their lives. But, more importantly, students, upon entering college as adults, often lack a complete and current understanding of at least some, if not many, key issues that combine to create the complexities of humans as sexual beings. Sex education in grades K—12 tends to be incomplete, inadequate, sometimes misleading, and too often, nonexistent. The author explains everything so well. I love how he incorporates questions his students have asked him throughout the years and actually answers them in this textbook in an educated manner. I rented this textbook and the quality in which I received it was near new. I really enjoyed this textbook since it wasn’t hard to comprehend at all. The price of this textbook is high but if you manage to rent it, I can honestly say that you will enjoy it.

The comparability of measurements made in differing circumstances by different methods and investigators is a fundamental pre-condition for all of science. Successful applications of technology require comparable measurements. While the applications herefocus on educational tests, score linking issues are directly applicable to medicine and many branches of behavioral science.

Since the 1980s, the fields of educational and psychological measurement have enhanced and widely applied techniques for producing linked scores that are comparable. The interpretation attached to a linkage depends on how the conditions of the linkage differ from the ideal. In this book, experts in statistics and psychometrics describe classes of linkages, the history of score linkings, data collection designs, and methods used to achieve sound score linkages. They describe and critically discuss applications to a variety of domains including equating of achievement exams, linkages between computer-delivered exams and paper-and-pencil exams, concordances between the current version of the SAT® and its predecessor, concordances between the ACT® and the SAT®, vertical linkages of exams that span grade levels, and linkages of scales from high-stakes state assessments to the scales of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

Dr. Neil J. Dorans is a Distinguished Presidential Appointee at Educational Testing Service. During his 27 years at ETS, he has had primary responsibility for the statistical work associated with the AP®, PSAT/NMSQT®, and SAT® exams. He was the architect for the recentered SAT scales. He has guest edited special issues on score linking for Applied Measurement in Education, Applied Psychological Measurement, and the Journal of Educational Measurement.

Dr. Mary Pommerich is a psychometrician in the Personnel Testing Division of the Defense Manpower Data Center, where she works with the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) testing program. She guest edited a special issue on concordance for Applied Psychological Measurement. Her research is typically generated by practical testing problems and has focused on a wide variety of issues, including linking and concordance.

Dr. Paul W. Holland is the Frederic M. Lord Chair in Measurement and Statistics at Educational Testing Service and before that professor in the School of Education and the department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley. His books include Discrete Multivariate Analysis, Differential Item Functioning, Perspectives on Social Network Research , and two books on test score equating. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute for Mathematical Statistics, was designated a National Associate of the National Academies, was awarded for his career contributions by the National Council on Measurement in Education, and was elected to the National Academy of Education.

The Bruce Lee story is really good! Linda Lee's book about her husband, the legendary Bruce Lee is a great biographical story! Linda Lee shares her private moments and her thoughts about the man she loved so much! Bruce Lee is the Chinese-American who would eventually become the greatest Martial Artist of all time! The photos from Linda Lee's personal collection are great! Bruce Lee is at his best when pictured on the set of his movies, like the Big Boss, Fist of Fury, Way of the Dragon, Game of Death, and Enter the Dragon! I do recommend this book because Linda lee is the only person who knew Bruce lee better than anyone because she was his wife! their is no information on the death of Brandon Lee because this book was published in 1989. A+

Very good an interesting book about an interesting man!

Bruce Lee. Some things the average reader will not know about this man: Bruce Lee only made four movies in his lifetime. Bruce Lee was an intellectual. Bruce Lee revolutionized the martial arts. Bruce Lee brought the martial arts to the masses.
This book is written by Bruce Lee's wife. It is a short and loving memory to an extraordianry man who is still famous. Why exactly is a mystery. Perhaps it is the outstanding artistry Bruce Lee brought to the martial arts.
Bruce Lee had been a child actor in Hong Kong before coming to the United States and studying at the University of Washington. Ironically, he was a philosophy major. However, Lee transformed himself into a tremendous human specimen through his physical discipline, and a intellectual regarding his sport. He introduced "the way of the moving fist," which was a new methodology in the training of martial arts. He also dared to tech the subject to non-Asians, a idea which was tremendously disturbing to many and resulted in a fistfight with a young challenger in Lee's studio in Oakland, California.
Linda Lee comes across as a traveler who feels luck in being able to travel (for a brief while) on the road with Bruce Lee. He was convinced to move to Hollywood, where he began training stars like James Coburn, and later Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Unfortunnately, Bruce Lee had to fight racism and stereotypes. At home, his wife's family rejected him because of his Asian heritage. Hollywood rejected him because he didn't want to play the 'chop-suey' roles Hollywood routinely put forth in portraying Asians in film and television. However, a searing performance in the late 1960's on a detective show cemented his star quality,and he made some appearences on "the Green Hornet."
Finally, he made some pictures in the Hollywood system such as "Enter the Dragon."
Unfortunately, his most interesting and allusionary work, "The Game of Death," which was supposed to be a representation of his philophy of his art was never completed. I believe an assembled film was cobbeld together after his death, but the film was never finished. Interestingly, Kareem Abdul Jabbar played the ultimate obstacle in the movie.
Linda Lee's book has many interesting pictures, and I think gives an interesting look at Bruce Lee's life and impact that will have even the most casual reader satisfied.
If you are looking for lurid details, conspiracies and the like this book is not for you. Understandably, Ms. Lee does not cover the topic of Bruce Lee's supposed drug use and the unusual circumstances of his death, but what would you expect, this is a loving portrait by a woman who obviously loved Bruce Lee very much. Cheers for her!
Interestingly, several weeks ago, I watched a Turkish film in which a charecter kept repeating the line, " I will chop them up like Bruce Lee." In a Turkish film for crying out loud.
Obviously, Bruce Lee ahd a great impact on the world for his incredible talent which was taken from us before Bruce Lee could intepret it for the rest of us. In this way, he reminds me of Jimi Hendrix; Bruce Lee was a shooting star across the heavens.
This is a good book, and I believe you will like it as well.

Alexander Adams, the actor who reads this full-length novelization of Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace, actually manages to do Jar Jar better than Jar Jar himself. Although he does sound a bit like a well-meaning dad doing an impression of the gangly amphibian for his kids, that added bit of restraint and unaffected goofiness actually works. Likewise, Adams's voice--all earnest and NPR-smooth--does good service to the rest of the cast, especially with Jedi teacher Qui-Gon Jinn and (surprisingly) Queen Amidala. (Only Anakin proves a little hard on the ears at first, perhaps a little too nasal.) The book's narrative receives the same competent treatment as the dialogue, with the added oomph of both John Williams's stirring score--woven in unobtrusively--and short suites of Lucasfilm sound effects that accompany every spike in the action, whether it's R2's beeping or the metallic bang of blaster fire.

Modern marketing has made movie novelizations a necessary evil and hence suspect, but Terry Brooks proves a deft embellisher of Lucas's well-loved epic, skillfully splicing in scenes and dialogue to fill out the breakneck, foreshadowing-filled story line of Phantom Menace. But that shouldn't be surprising: Brooks has long been the equal or better of Lucas when it comes to storytelling, most notably in his long-lived Shannara series, which began with The Sword of Shannara back in 1977, the same year Star Wars hit theaters. Expands on the film, but not by much

I’m going to come right out and say it without a lot of puttering around: I was disappointed by this book. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it for what it was, but it left a lot to be desired for me. I go into novelizations expecting more depth and substance to the cinematic counterpart, and occasionally slightly better dialogue and expansion on pivotal events. That’s not the case with this one.

The biggest problem I had was the dialogue; nearly every spoken line was taken directly from the film. Read: cringeworthy (Anakin’s especially, just as in the movie). I will admit that it was better to read it than hear it, so maybe that’s why I was able to not roll my eyes as much. The book also suffers from repetitive descriptions. Do we really need to be told every other page that Panaka and Windu are dark-skinned? Or that Jar Jar has a “billed face”? Or be reminded of the characters’ full names each time the scene changes?

I may be speaking out of bias (because I’ve come to adore Qui-Gon and Padme), but I also felt that a few key scenes were glossed over too quickly. The rift between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan when the Master decided to train Anakin, Qui-Gon’s death and its impact on Obi-Wan and Anakin, and Anakin’s separation from the mother he loved so fiercely; both were extremely important, yet with a few words they were over and done with, each character seemingly fine with life mere moments after the events. Obi-Wan at this point is still very much a slave to his emotions and that feeling of betrayal was something significant for him, even when Qui-Gon explained that he thought his Padawan ready to become a Knight. It also would have been nice to have seen Obi-Wan have more time to get a handle on his rage and grief at losing his Master and life-long friend, or to give Anakin a few paragraphs of struggling to overcome his separation anxiety from the only life he’d ever known and the only person he’d ever loved.

Speaking of moving too quickly, I still don’t like how fast Anakin’s and Padme’s relationship developed. Paralleling Rose and the Doctor’s shift in affections changed in Doctor Who, one moment Anakin and Padme are friends, the next they’re in love? I understand the love-at-first-sight motif and the love-stronger-than-anything device and their prevalence within Anakin’s life story, but this book did nothing to ease that transition that made me scratch my head during the film.

Although I do have several complaints, there are a few good things that I did like. My dislike of Jar Jar was lessened thanks to Brooks going deeper into his emotions and insecurities. I also greatly enjoyed Maul’s appearances, brief as they were, because of the further insight afforded to him; I never really felt connected to him during the movie, so it’s through the books that I’ve come to like him. Brooks didn’t disappoint me on that front.

Overall I felt that this particular attempt at a novelization fell short of what it could have been. If it had been given twenty additional pages of insight into the various characters and the emotional trauma they were subjected to throughout the story I would have rated it higher. I don’t know how much of that was because of contractual obligations or simply Brooks’ style, but in the end it doesn’t matter; this was a mediocre adaptation at best, sad to say.

Competent retelling, but nothing new

Terry Brooks provides a competent retelling of the Phantom Menace, but that's it. There aren't any new scenes in the book and the dialogue is almost the same. You won't really learn anything new about the main characters that isn't already apparent in the film. The narration is pretty straightforward - none of the rhetorical flourishes that made Matt Stover's episode III novelization such a hit. Moreover, since Phantom Menace was such a visual experience, it just doesn't feel the same reading it on the printed page. Overall, if for some reason you have a burning desire to read rather than watch TPM, the book does a fine job retelling the story. But you're probably just better off rewatching the movie.

James Luceno's short story in the new edition is ok, but probably not worth the price of the book. It covers Darth Maul's whereabouts during TPM and his search for the Gungan cities. It comes across as very workmanlike, covering certain events that must have had to happen offscreen, rather than providing a compelling new tale. There is one emotional scene when Maul learns about Hego Damask, but since Maul is killed shortly thereafter it doesn't affect a whole lot in the end.

There are extra scenes that are not in the movie, characters thoughts are revealed and there is extra dialogue. I liked the movie but the book gives insights into characters, actions and scenes that are not possible in the movie.
There is a good pace to the book and I found it enjoyable.
This edition also has a short story Darth Maul: End Game. This expands Darth Mauls' backstory and fills in gaps in the film with what he was doing 'offscrene'. In this story we see more of Dath Sidious and what he expects from Darth Maul.
This is also an enjoyable story

Good reference for scale modelers

This book is essentially a collection of photographs of the F-16 from the Thunderbird demonstration team, to the European scheme, to the Air Superiority scheme, to the US Navy Aggressor scheme. The photographs are accompanied by text which explains unique features of the photo. A useful reference for scale modelers who want to customize stock plastic kits. Plenty of shots of landing gear, IR sensors, cockpit (as much as can be shown for an unclassified document) and engine. If you're looking for information on how the bird actually works, you're better off with a copy of the "Falcon 4.0" PC flight simulation game manual or Shaw's "Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering" book.

This is strictly a "picture" book with pictures of the different F-16 paint jobs around the world.
There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING worthwile tactical or technical in this book.
Buy it only if you like pretty pictures of the F-16!

Easiest reading for non pilot

This is definetly the easiest reading on how to fly and fight a modern fighter/attack aircraft. In the first 20 pagaes I learned more about air to air guns than I ever learned and I've read many manuals. I only fly computer simulators, but, like any hobby you want to be good at it. I've posted message,s on some of the other sim sites about this book because I think it is a must for sim enthusiasts. I also can now appretiate what these pilots must go thru to learn their craft.

The economic success of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was due as much to its strict Puritan society as to any market factors, contends University of Virginia historian Innes (Work and Labor in Early America, Univ. of North Carolina Pr., 1988). Through various institutions in their civil society, Puritan leaders inculcated the Protestant work ethic and linked it with the concept of honest labor leading to private ownership. Civic government substituted for trade guilds by enforcing quality control of the colony's products. The Puritans used the church, the family, and the General Court to create a moral capitalism that enabled the colonists to gain a high standard of living without becoming corrupted by it. Innes examines Puritan economic success in detail and provides extensive bibliographic notes. Rehabilitating the Puritans

The first reviewer for the work gives an admirable and accurate summary of its main theses, so I will cut to the chase and begin my critique. I am one of the undergraduates who had the good fortune to actually read this book for Innes' course in Colonial American history at U.Va. As such, my opinion of the book may be skewed by the context in which I read it. In the book, Innes makes an admirable effort in making the Puritans understandable to the modern reader. He cogently outlines the foundational ethic of Puritans and how its internal paradoxes fostered constant striving for social justice and economic prosperity. The book is useful in dispelling much of the fairy tale images of early American history that popular culture feeds us. Readers shouldn't fear the word "economic" in the subtitle; the text is dense but not inaccessible. Nevertheless, the book IS an undergraduate level textbook, and it is rather substantial. I recommend it only for the reader with a real passion for the subject matter.

Innes argues that the economic success of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was due to the Puritans creation of a society in which capitalism, community, and civil society were connected. The Protestant work ethic, which was taught in the household, pulpit, meetinghouse, and assembly, instructed that God provided every man with a calling and it was his duty to work hard at it. This religious-based work ethic coupled with the belief that profit taking was fine as long as the profits were used to help others (the linking of individual and collective well-being) encouraged the development, within the community, of an individual-based capitalism. These two beliefs endorsed "striving" behavior and enterprise which led to the growth of the economy.
