In 2004, Kimberly & James Dean sat down at their kitchen table to work on a children's book together. Their dream finally became a reality with the release of Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses. Both left corporate jobs in the late nineties (James was an electrical engineer, Kimberly worked in the press office of the governor of Georgia) to pursue their passion for art, and they have experienced a life made up of strange and wonderful coincidences ever since. Bad history, bad writing, and Pete's a no-show!

Looking for the familiar "Pete" charming rhyme, the enchanting, clever, repetitious, easily remembered refrains? The delightful songs, the enchanting story line, the can't wait to turn the page narrative, the contageous humor, the cat that can't be anything but loved? Buy one of the former Pete The Cat books--THAT Pete is a no show here. Here you get watered down, superficial "history" with little charm and ho-hum narrative with a cat named Pete that has no point in the whole of it. At $3.00 it's still a book not worth buying. Alas. The first Pete's were outasight...hope Pete's found, but he's a no show in The First Thanksgiving.

My grandson loves his other Pete The Cat books, but this one was written differently and not in early reader style. I would not buy it again.

My kids love Pete the Cat, but this book doesn't live up to the others. Particularly, there is no Pete the Cat song/singing, which the kids noticed and missed right away.

About the Author
Born Lancashire, England, J. P. Ashman is a Northern lad through and through. His parents love wildlife, history, fantasy and science fiction, and passed their passion on to him. They read to him from an early age and encouraged his imagination at every turn. His career may be in optics, as a manager/technician, but he loves to make time for writing and reading every day. Now living rurally in the Cotswolds with Wifey and their little Norse Goddess Freya, he's inspired daily by the views they have and the things they see, from the deer in the fields to the buzzards circling overhead. Writing is a huge part of his life and the medieval re-enactment background and tabletop gaming lend to it; when he's not writing the genre, he's either reading or playing it. He plans to keep writing, both within his current series, and those to come, whether short stories or epic tomes.

A Story Worthy of Epic

I was a bit dismayed when starting Black Cross. The opening pages gave a lengthy list of characters and their descriptions. Ok, epic fantasy I get it but I tend to have GRRM cold sweat moments of needing index cards and a cork board until I can get everything under my belt and into my memory. So off I went into the wonderful world that Mr. Ashman has constructed. By page 50 or so I started to notice an itch at the back of my neck that something needed to happen. I thought about my motivation behind that, do I really need brain wrenching action right off the bat, to see violence or some other type of mayhem to enjoy a book from the beginning? I have read numerous works that never picked up but enjoyed them immensely such as The Iliad. Yeah, I know I really liked it but I have never in my life said I wasn't off center. :P)

By the time I had finished the book I was putting off reading more than a chapter at the time just so I could wake the next day a spend more time with the characters of the Black Cross that I have grown so fond of and now wait patiently for the next book/novella (hint hint wink wink Mr. Ashman). Black Cross doesn't really start off slow but there is a bit that needs to be introduced to get the various plot lines, yepper more than one, off and running. It gives the reader a chance to experience the characters in everyday nuances that for me only enriched my experience with each character. Mr. Ashman is weaving a web throughout the book that will end some plot lines and expand others that will continue on in the series. I stopped trying to guess a third of the way into the book and sat back, relaxed and kept reading.

The characters are well developed. I am not a fan of bringing out everything about a character right off or even throughout the entire book if it is the first book of a series. I want mystery, with hints of insight into their past and future. It leaves room for surprise and fulfillment. Ms. Ashman accomplishes this with all of the characters. Biv and Sears are my fav throughout the book. A Laurel and Hardy relationship to be sure but the play between them only heightens what you don’t know about them even though they make references from time to time alluding to the depth of their understanding of each other and their relationship. I also enjoyed the cockney accent given to the two characters reveling in sounding it out in my head. Told you before, I am off center. hehe.

The environment involves humans, elves, and dwarfs although you don’t get to meet any dwarfs in the first book. The diversity of the races along with the diversity within the races is pleasant. One would expect the same type of fantasy trope as you read along but there is some surprising elements of the humans that I haven’t read in fantasy before and a slight different angle on the elves as well. I really enjoyed all aspects of this book from environment, character development to the development of the plot lines and where they lead too. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants a fantasy novel that will be a fresh aspect in many avenues from the typical tropes of fantasy that we know.

I also enjoyed, my opinion and assessment, the underlying messages delivered by Mr. Ashman’s writing. One person despite what meme’s and other philosophical bozos tell you can’t change the world. Statistically even that one person that looks to have change the world had help since birth to get to that point so yeah, one person can’t change the world. What the reader sees in the Black Cross is not that any person should set out to change the world but go forth and do what is right. If you are fortunate you may touch one life, one area or community in a way that will set things in motion to be just a bit better than they would have been otherwise. One of the MC sets things in motion but after that no one act of his makes or breaks the plot or the final goal. But what if that MC decided to not do the right thing to stand up and act? Would the final goal still been achieved? Possibly but we will not know that because that MC decided to act and not sit by and watch or just complain and do nothing. We all can learn something from that in the Black Cross. Doing the right thing should be its own reward and not the expectation of the positive consequence that may never come to fruition.

Buy the Black Cross, you will not be disappointed and more than likely will add a new favorite author to your list.

An epic fantasy novel you should definitely read...

The author creates an epic, richly-detailed and powerfully written fantasy novel. As others have pointed out, the novel has a more gently-paced start, but once the multiple storylines are up and running, the novel quickly kicks into high gear and does not disappoint. At times gritty and dark, especially during the intense fight scenes, the book isn't all gloom and doom with the darkness often offset by the humorous banter between two of the books most interesting characters. I think fans of Mark Lawrence, Joe Abercrombie or David Gemmell will enjoy this book.

I have no idea why anyone wants to buy this horsecrap and how in hell's domain will it ever be useful to any sane person. After buying the textbook I was struck by lightning, sold my soul to the devil, witnessed my dog killed before my very eyes, and saw my grandma go to jail for killing my dog. WHY IS THIS SO EXPENSIVE!

A recently widowed American food writer finds solace and love—and the most inspiring food she's ever encountered—during a visit to China in Mones's sumptuous latest. Still reeling from husband Matt's accidental death a year ago, food writer Maggie McElroy is flummoxed when a paternity claim is filed against Matt's estate from Beijing, where he sometimes traveled for business. Before Maggie embarks on the obligatory trip to investigate, her editor assigns her a profile on Sam Liang, a half-Chinese American chef living in Beijing who is about to enter a prestigious cooking competition. Sam's old-school recipes and history lessons of high Chinese cuisine kick-start Maggie's dulled passion for food and help her let go of her grief, even as she learns of Matt's Beijing bed hopping. Though the narrative can get bogged down in the minutiae of Chinese culinary history (filtered through the experiences of Sam's family), Mones's descriptions of fine cuisine are tantalizing, and her protagonist's quest is bracing and unburdened by melodrama. Early in her visit, Maggie scoffs at the idea that "food can heal the human heart." Mones smartly proves her wrong. (May)

Great for lovers of Chinese cuisine.

My favorite feature of this book is its incorporation of Chinese history in the story line. I was delighted to learn so much about China and Chinese cuisine--a topic of total ignorance for me. The feature that most spoiled my enjoyment of the book was the incorporation of Chinese history in the story line. Where this was done well--in short passages integrated and supportive of either character development or plot--the reading experience was enhanced with surprises that did not detract from the story. Where this facet became an information dump, I was pulled away from the story and, in some instances, bored. The author obviously loves the subject more than she cares about the reading experience.
The situation set up by the story premise could have been devleoped into a more complex story with a bit more investment in focus on the characters rather than the food. Everyone was too virtuous for this to be an interesting story. The only really flawed, interesting character was dead.

It's a wonderful experience to discover a new author, and Nicole Mones is a welcome addition to my list of favorites. I was thoroughly engaged by the characters and their conflicts, and as a foodie I loved the descriptions of traditional Chinese dishes and the stories behind them. Ms. Mones' way of describing feelings, textures and tastes captivated me. On occasion, I re-read passages just for the pleasure of her evocative prose. Definitely a 5 star read for me.

interesting topic--she is a mediocre writer with wonderful research skills so she builds a fascinating setting with great fact basis--here the high cuisine of china ( in "evening in shanghai" the story is in part the lively jazz culture of pre ww2 shanghai--similar review- great setting and research, fair minus novel ). for a foody- especially a Chinese foody -this is an in depth introduction to a remarkable subject

This really help when I was grieving my dad. I know there's something after this life so I needed a book that talked about it, not explained it to me like all the other books did. This helped me ALOT.

I know the author and Deb has always been a very positive person - never realized how much she was in touch with her sister. I guess I need to listen and pay more attention to my surroundings - have never felt or heard messages from my relatives who have passed on. Deb gives me a whole new perspective.

Not What I Expected

I was slightly disappointed by this book as I expected more of a "how to" book as suggested by its subtitle, "The Easy Guide to Connecting With Loved Ones on the Other Side". The bulk of pages are personal accounts of signs & synchronicities people have experienced surrounding a loved one's death. Being open to subtle hints from the Other Side is a biggie, but I was hoping for more.

The author's ongoing relationship with her deceased sister gives hope for those who wonder if anything exists once we pass over.
