This is a must-read for all creative professionals

Nathan's been the expert on proposals for years, both as a top-notch consultant and the founder of Nusii. He clearly knows what he's talking about — the book is written from the standpoint of value-based pricing, which is gold for any consultant or freelancer. I recommend this book to anyone who's seriously re-thinking their workflow. The book is very focused and certainly a great investment of one's time.

It's really hard to find things that will dramatically improve your business, but this book might be one of them. Proposals are such an important piece of the sales cycle and a really easy one to screw up. Too often you find books like this where it's the author's opinion, or it is what the author arbitrarily decided were the important points to follow. Nathan's unique position helping thousands of freelancers, agencies and consultants of all kinds get more work brings a much stronger empirical approach than anything else I've seen. Highly recommended.

With appreciated use of subheadings and bullets, this book is an easy read and will continue to be a reference for me moving forward with my clients.

When Humanitarianism Goes Bad

In Blackhawk Down, Mark Bowden tells a rather military centric story of when Special Forces went into Somalia to round up some Somalia warlords and instead events ended up having a chilling effect of American intervention, I would argue up until September 11th. In reading Blackhawk Down, one gets the ultimate soldiers’ perspective as the story jumps around from place to place to give almost a panoramic view of the fight to live to see tomorrow.

There were parts of the book where I slipped into a malaise of sorts because how many pages of we shoot, they die or they shoot and we die can a person take before they slip into this unintended emotionless state of being? And yes, before anyone asks, I was aware that this wasn’t going to be basket of puppy hour. I don’t know if what I experienced was a defect in the way Bowden told the story itself or if I just never got hooked into this one.

Blackhawk Down didn’t work for me.

STRUCTURALLY UNSOUND, BUT ENJOYABLE OVERALL

Bowden's book is written in the kind of language you would expect from a traditional journalist. He is clear, concise, and does not bog his language down in artistic flourish. In fact, in his Afterward he claims to be proud of this straightforwardness with the reader; this despite it garnering him a slight barb from one particular reviewer he mentions.

However, it must be said that the structure of the book is a little messy. The number of individuals whose points of view Bowden includes can be daunting to sift through. I did not even bother to count the POVs he puts down on paper, but the reader should be aware there is no centralized perspective to go back to for reference. The author does not inject himself into the story (e.g. "And then I interviewed this person who said..."), and ordinarily that is fine. But, with a book showcasing the perspectives of so many people -- from lowly soldiers, to the their families, to commanders, to politicians -- it is difficult to sort through who is who and why any particular person is relevant. What makes it worse is that Bowden doesn't really offer any breaks for a reader to register a transition from one person's POV to another. Unfortunately, this problem hampers the flow of the story as the reader, at times, may be forced to backtrack just to refresh his or her memory on who is who. To be fair, Bowden interviewed countless individuals and wanted to give a good many of them their due. I have no doubt he left out many of POVs despite deep reservation. Still, none of this matters if the reader is not discouraged by such things. I was still able to jog through the book at a brisk and enjoyable pace in spite of this road block.

Another important note: this book corresponds poorly with the eponymous movie. The reader will find many of the characters in the movie are composites of actual people Bowden describes in the book. Not to mention the movie glosses over some of the uglier aspects of war (e.g. in the book, Bowden writes the U.S. Rangers eventually start shooting anything and everything in their path, including a large number of unarmed civilians). So, if you are ready for a dose of reality, read the book and drop your jaw.

Wow this is an event that makes you think

This book is an eye opener. I saw the movie many years ago and didn't really comprehend the magnitude of what happened in that battle...maybe I was too young when the movie was released. The battle described by the author from the point of view of the Rangers and Delta Force is written in a way I've never experienced before in a book. Fast moving action, with the personal experiences of various soldiers. It is unbelievable that so much carnage could happen in such a relatively short time, even though this battle definitely felt like an eternity to the guys who were fighting the good fight. Once again a sad story about the cost of good vs. evil, and the amazing people who are willing to give up everything to fight that fight. I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates this type of book, it is truly gripping and it has had such an effect on me that I am constantly shopping for more of the same :)

Maglev America, also describes how the heavy lift capabilities of the 2nd generation superconducting Maglev transport can be deployed as a means of storing electric energy generated from large variable power generation facilities such as wind and solar, and how it can be used as a high-volume water transport system to meet the water resource challenge for many drought areas in the US and the World. An Alternate Future Ignored

This is an edited volume whose chapters all address MAGLEV. Aside from three introductory chapters, the remainder is broken into chapters that address an intercity MAGLEV network, public transit MAGLEV systems, an energy storage MAGLEV system, and individual chapters on applying a MAGLEV system for water transport and launch of space craft. One does wonder what the future of the USA might have been if such a grandiose application of MAGLEV was pushed by the federal government as the government had done for the railroad. Unfortunately we will probably never know.Note that there is no index for this volume.

The technology exists, where is our courage to break ground? The author's do an excellent job of laying out why Maglev's potential is not only plausible, but vital.

Finally, it explores the role of regional states in shaping US-China relations, and in doing so covers the influence of Japan, India, the Korean Peninsula, the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Cambodia. With chapters from leading scholars and analysts this book deals with a diverse range of issues including strategic rivalry, expanding regional trade relations, non-traditional security issues, the role of energy security, maritime security and how Asian states view their relations with the US and China respectively.

Excellent - 5 Stars

Pedigree is a thought provoking case study into hiring practices of what the author terms Elite Professional Services firms (EPS). From the viewpoint of someone interested in inequality, Rivera explains how choices in target campuses, interview structure (fit, polish), and choice to use revenue-generating staff to interview (vs HR) stack the deck against non traditional candidates. Alternatively, for a jobseeker, Pedigree is an amazing insight because it informs about systemic biases and specific techniques to overcome them. Despite having prepared extensively for a summer internship interview at an EPS, this guide provided much deeper understanding about the interview evaluation and hiring committee process. Finally, I was impressed with the quality of the research methodology (hands-on research, inductive coding, accounting for author's own background). I highly recommend Pedigree for people interested in equitable and effective hiring practices and MBA/law school students seeking EPS jobs.

Nothing new, but an interesting read!

I'm not sure what to make of "Pedigree"'s marketing campaign. The book certainly has received a lot of hype, most provocatively in the Economist (headline: "How to join the 1%"). I'm baffled, however, that Amazon is promoting "Pedigree" as "vocational guidance."

"Pedigree" is not a "how-to" guide for joining elite firms. (Again, I'm not exactly sure why it's being promoted as such.) Rather, the book is an easy-to-read text that details/gives an overview of Rivera's research on hiring practices at a few investment banking, consulting and law firms. The insight the book offers is certainly not new for anyone familiar with these industries, but Rivera (heavily influenced by Bourdieu) offers a succinct, beautifully written sociological analysis of a world that is foreign to many -- and one that has not received much attention from academics.

I found the book a pleasure to read, though I found Rivera's analysis slightly repetitive and her presentation of nontraditional candidates who succeeded in accepting offers (chapter 10) lacking. I do look forward, however, to following her work in the future, and I am impressed by her life story (from a single-parent home in L.A. to Yale to Northwestern's Kellogg). Overall, this is a great read for scholars/professionals/laypeople who are interested in exploring the state of our "meritocracy" and are excited by the growing publication of "popular" books about American educational inequality ("Our Kids;" "Privilege;" etc).

Sheds new light on the gatekeepers of the 1%

A thought-provoking, well-researched analysis of the entry-level hiring process at the most elite employers in finance, law and business consulting -- one might even call them "the gatekeepers of the 1%." My husband and I are both part of the world described here (he in consulting and me in law), as we both managed to gate-crash our way in from non-elite family backgrounds. Having done our share of hiring committee work, we can vouch for a lot of the picture painted here.* However, the book's value derives not from the care taken in accurately describing the hiring process, but from the new light the author throws on the subject, even for those already familiar with this world.

Rivera has done society a service by illuminating the unspoken norms against which all applicants to these top employers are judged. These norms, like the need to show participation in a team sport (or similar significant time commitment in a familiar group activity), or the ability to seize and hold the floor in a conversation about serious subjects, are unremarkable features of upper class life. However, they are not the natural outcomes of being raised in a poor family, and outside of attending a boarding school on a scholarship, there is nowhere you can go to learn them. So, although none of these norms overtly discriminate against applicants who are not rich, white Anglo-Saxons (though there are incidents of blatantly illegal discriminatory acts in the book too), their net effect is to largely screen out people whose lives do not resemble those of the wealthy. The book is worth reading in order to see this process in action, or for would-be applicants, even to structure your college years and take other non-obvious steps in preparation.

*In terms of the particulars, in my experience, the picture for applicants from non-elite law schools is not as dire as described here. At both of the white-shoe firms where I worked, new associates were from a range of law schools in the top 50, plus local ones (though you still had to be in the top of your class outside of the elite schools). Of course, this was in Atlanta, not in NYC, so it is possible that the top dog firms in NYC only look at a few law schools.

A profound and exciting look at the economic world past, present, and to come

This is an enormously exciting book. I might even say it is an astonishment. Written by a non-academic economist, an aerospace engineer with a Master’s degree in Engineering from the University of Liverpool, it reads like a refreshing wave of sanity. Gregg David’s opus is 704 pages long replete with endnotes and references that make it clear that this is one heck of a “hobby” (as he characterized it to me). This is a transformative work with ideas and information that every educated person should know delivered in a style shorn of most of the usual academic econ jargon.

David is an engineer but he doesn’t write like an engineer. He writes a like a highly informed journalist with a keen creative mind set. I confess I am only through about 100 of the 704 pages, but I felt I just had to get a review out since this is the most interesting book on economics that I have ever read.

Here are a couple of tidbits to give you an idea of what I am talking about:

“Graham Hill, CEO of architectural and design firm Life Edited has commented upon how the explosion of belongings available to us has outstripped our ability to store it. In the USA there is currently a $22 billion industry devoted to the storage of personal goods which either cannot be stored at home, or are no longer wanted at home.

“The absurdity of this scenario beggars belief. Large proportions of people now buy possessions for which they have no room or immediate requirement for, in order to pay to store these items in a unit on the other side of the city.” (p. 91)

The quote is from Chapter 1.3 “The Culture of Consumption,” the very title of which gives you an idea of where we’ve been, where we are and where we are going. David recalls built-in obsolescence leading to the consumptive society as early as the 19th century. He recalls how Henry Ford some years later tried to continue selling his Model T automobile (“any color as long as it’s black”) without changes from year to year but had to reverse strategy when other car manufactures came out with new models every third year or so even though the changes were superficial and/or stylistic. This “perceived obsolescence” became the driving force behind “cyclical consumption” (p. 47) and a highly significant “engine of economics.”

David notes that “obsolescence is not necessarily a good or bad thing” (p. 51) while pointing to four types of obsolescence:

Technological obsolescence
Functional obsolescence
Planned obsolescence
Perceived obsolescence

As I see it, the major driving force in the contemporary economy is technological obsolescence. Things don’t grow old and break down; they don’t necessarily go out of style (although there is plenty of that); nor is planned obsolescence even necessary for many products and services. As David observes “a product which is continually and purposefully re-launched with incrementally improved technologies is one which is planned for technological obsolescence.” (p. 52)

Another interesting idea in just this first one-seventh of the book is that of the “flawed consumer” who lacks fluency in “the language of goods.” “In essence ... [this language] demands that consumers be dissatisfied to some degree, as a fully satisfied consumer will naturally desire to consume less; this is anathema to a market predicated on perpetual production, perpetual labour and infinite growth.” (p. 81) The “flawed” part refers to those who have not the coin to buy what they have been taught to desire, and they are embarrassed. They are unemployed or underemployed and are experiencing an “aspiration gap.” (p. 83) In a larger sense the malcontented young men of the Middle East who engage in terrorism are the most extreme example of the flawed consumer. They see what people in other parts of the world can buy and use and feel they have nothing to lose and little to live for and so their sense of right and wrong becomes corrupted.

And then there is the idea of the consumer as an addict. David writes: “Shopping in a consumer society is marketed as a pleasurable pastime which can improve mood or act as a reward for hard work.” (p. 86) There is also the idea of “neophilia” (from sociologist Colin Campbell) in which the addiction is for products and services that are new, pristine and perhaps shiny. (p. 86)

Finally I want to point to the idea that in the consumer society the average individual is not as significant as a voter as he or she is as a consumer of products and services.

I will update this review as I finish reading the book. I am excited to see where David is going with reference to “A Post-Market Economy” which I imagine will demand the kind of sustainability not consistent with today’s economic reality.

"Mircles" of a modern day Saint

This is book is a must read for all those who are seeking the Divine. This is a beautiful rendering from the original book, updated for translation, but not altered. Shirdi Sai Baba’s stories based on his life as an amazing Divine soul and how through these stories he has touched and continues to awaken and heal the openhearted seekers and the curious seekers of God. I truly experienced the blessings of Baba on completion of this book. The book has beautiful illustrations of original art work by Baba devotees along with original photos of Baba. I have read this through several times and now it is inspiring to just randomly open a page and read one of the stories to propel you into a day with gratitude and love!

"Shirdi Baba is the avatar for this yuga. He is the number one perfect incarnation of Dattatreya. Baba always said Allah Maalik Ek--God is one. The inner meaning of this was all the three (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) were in him, Dattatreya. No doubt, he was a purely Shiva character. A Shiva Datta character means Shiva with a begging bowl living a very simple life. He had amazing abilities, but rarely showed them. He meditated for fifty years, non-stop. Non-stop means he only took off one to two hours each day to go into the village and ask for food. Then again he sat in his Dwarkamai, meditating and doing his spiritual process. After some years, he took his meditation energy and made four flames in a room underground. Then he sealed that room to keep those lights burning to store his meditation power, all his energy, for millions of people to be able to receive that energy in the future. Whatever top miracles any saint did on this planet, Baba did ten times more powerfully. It was proved in that village by thousands of stories. He passed October 15, 1918, but still his soul exists.
