Decent Enough

Pretty solid for a 1st edition. Good information, good writing style and good layout/presentation. The author does break some new ground in his explanations and students of music theory that may have had trouble before will find many subjects better explained and more readily grasped and absorbed. I recommend this book heartily.

Beautiful little book

This is an excellent book - short and to the point, it only has about 65 pages of text (including a few photos) plus scripts from "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Get Smart" (another 100 pages or so). But in those first 65 pages, Bill Idelson debunks all the myths about how to write scripts - for TV or movies alike. The information is cut-and-dry, but so insightful. It's almost like you're in the class and he's talking to YOU, the reader, directly. He explains why bad scripts fail and good ones succeed - and the common traits of all good writers (I won't spoil it for those who haven't yet read the book.) Idelson was in the biz for many years as an actor, and as a top-flight comedy writer - and he eventually developed his renowned writing method and master class, which is the subject of this book. If you're in Hollywood, treading water and desperately trying to sell a script and you haven't yet read this book, pick up a copy today!

I had the honor and priviledge of taking Bill Idelson's writing class from the master himself. As far as I know, he's the only screenwriting teacher who actually had a career as a screenwriter...in fact, he's the winner of the Writers Guild Award. What a gift it is to all writers (not just comedy writers but dramatic writers, novelists, memoir scribblers, etc) that he captured the magic of his class in a book before he left us. This book is a master class that offers profound "ah-ha" moments about writing, life and yourself. Buy it, study it, write!

"A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"--which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. Lois Ehlert's chunky block illustrations show the luxuriant green palm standing straight and tall on the first page, but it begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka... BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath. A very simple board-book version stops there, but this original text goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts." Amusing book for baby!

I first heard of this book when a mom was reading to her child out loud. My husband and I thought, what a weird book about coconut trees and alphabets. We thought she made it up.

Enter baby and when we shopped for books this was a bestseller. We bought it and couldn't believe that was the story the mom recited! To my surprise, it was the only book that held my newborns attention. To this day -- now 6 months -- she is still captivated by the book images and rhythm. Favorite book for baby!

My 3 month old loves it!

My 3 month old is captivated! I'm not sure if she's making the connection to the letters, words, or the fact that I'm reading it, but she scans every page! The board book is sturdy and easy to handle, so I let my girl hold it and play with the pages as well.

(The authors do provide an impressive list of real-world projects that have used Python successfully, including an application at NASA and a major Web search engine.)

In lieu of a general language tour, this book centers on practical tips and examples for using Python on Windows, beginning with downloading and installing the free Python package. The most useful examples here present a Python library for general accounting objects. You'll learn how to write COM servers in Python and then how to script them in Visual Basic (used here to build user interfaces) and how to control Word and Excel with OLE Automation in Python. One standout example looks at building and printing accounting reports in Office 2000 using Python as the script language.

Later sections look at other possibilities, including how to use Python's support for MFC to build user interfaces. A notable section here looks at Windows NT system administration in Python. Because of its built-in support for dictionaries, Python is a natural fit for working with users, groups, permissions, and the like.

About the Author

Mark Hammond is an independent Microsoft Windows consultant working out of Melbourne, Australia. He studied computer science at the South Australian Institute of Technology (now the University of South Australia), and then worked with several large financial institutions in Australia. He started his consulting operation in 1995. Mark has produced many of the Windows extensions for Python, including PythonWin, Active Scripting, and Active Debugging support, and coauthored the COM framework and extensions. He is also a leading authority on Active Scripting and related technologies and has spoken on this subject at Microsofts three most recent Professional Developers conferences. Apart from being a father to his teenage daughter, having an interest in live music, and providing way-too-many free Python extensions, Mark has no life!

Andy Robinson is a London-based consultant specializing in business analysis, object-oriented design, and Windows development. He studied physics and philosophy, then Japanese studies at Oxford. He spent a year in advertising in Tokyo, two more in investment banking, and a long spell as the finance director of a startup in the sports industry. Observing that in all these positions he always ended up having to rewrite software, he moved to full-time computer consulting four years ago. He is currently helping one of the world's largest fund managers to internationalize their systems to handle Asian languages, developing Python systems for financial analysis, and reporting. Back when Andy had spare time, his passions were track and field, and rock climbing. Right now his two sons, Tim and Harry, are taking up all of his time.

Be careful

This book was written in 2000. There's not a problem working with the examples if you're using python 2.7.x. However, the book opens up with a pretty heavy intro to business finances accompanied by a class library that you need to download and make work on your system. There's about 6 chapters of this before you learn that you need to know VB. I looked into learning VB, and apparently VB is generally deemed obsolete and not even installed on windows 8? No thank you.

This book is cool if you're pretty heavy into python programming and you know some other languages as well. This book is not cool if you have beginning to intermediate level python skills.

An oldie but goodie.

A good way to get Python to 'do stuff' in a Win32 environment. I've found it most useful for dealing with people who utilize an exclusively Windows environment. Mostly, I've just taken my programs that others 'need' information from and quickly tacked on a printed report or updated spreadsheet that they can use. I don't know about writing whole programs in Windows, but it was more than adequate at helping me bridge the gaps I needed bridged. I presume the book to be pretty dated, but nothing I used was so out-of-date as to be non-functional.

Dated but Still Very Pertinent

For me the most valuable part of the book was Chapter 5 where it explains how to create COM objects using Python scripts. I always knew that I could do this, but I was never quite sure how. The example worked perfectly with Python 2.6 and got me up and running in no time. By doing this I can easily share my functions and classes with my coworkers who only use VBA.

If you are using Python to automate any of the Microsoft Office Applications, I highly reccomend it.

About the Author
John Clough is Slee Professor of Music Theory at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has published in a variety of journals, most notably on the use of mathematics in music. His article "Maximally Even Sets" won the Society for Music Theory Outstanding Publication Award in 1991. Professor Clough also served as editor of the journal Music Theory Spectrum.

Joyce Conley holds Ph.D.s in musicology and clinical psychology and has established careers in both fields. She is especially keen on studying the relationship between music and psychology when it comes to learning musical skills. Her pedagogical insights informed the second edition of Scales, Intervals, Keys, Triads, Rhythm and Meter and its companion volume Basic Harmonic Progressions, both coauthored with John Clough.

Perfect for Catch-uppers

C&C's second book in their programmed theory text series certainly lives up to expectations. It provides a strong emphasis on practical application of the rules of voice leading, allowing one to use them directly in composition, the techniques of analysis are neither cumbersome nor simplistic. For those of us who have some catch-up to play with our more advanced musical peers, this book will have a novice spouting progressions like f#: I-VII6-I6-IV-II-V-V7-I in no time flat.

A great way to learn the basics of voice leading and harmonic progressions. Works very well with the other Norton Programed texts. The layout of the book is what is most appealing. You learn new concepts and test these concepts as an on-going process. The book helps build solid voice-leading foundations, and reiterates importan concepts. I highly reccommend it!

About the Author
Paul Bushkovitch is a Professor of History at Yale University, where he has taught for the past 36 years. He is the author of Peter the Great: The Struggle for Power, 1671-1725 (Cambridge University Press, 2001), Religion and Society in Russia: The Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries (1991) and The Merchants of Moscow, 1580-1650 (Cambridge University Press, 1980). His articles have appeared in the Slavic Review, the Russian Review, Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteruopas and Kritika. He is a member of the editorial board for the Cahier du Monde Russe.

Engaging read!

This is one of the most enjoyable and entertaining histories I have ever read. Although the author inflects his writing with no sensationalism or emotional subjectivism, he knows how to turn a phrase in a way which leaves the reader eager to see what happens next. Every time I finished a chapter, I just had to read the first page of the next chapter to get a hint of what was to come! The history reads very cohesively, and binds together like a "story." I definitely plan on reading this whole book again, just for pleasure (I originally read it for a course).

Do note that this is not like a typical textbook-- there are no bolded terms, no chapter outlines, no supplementary timelines of important events, etc. As I said above, it reads more like a novel.

Good history of Russia

Despite the many excellent works on Russian history, decent single volume surveys are few and far between. Geoffrey Hosking and Abraham Ascher both have written short histories of Russia that, while good, left one wanting more (I was not that enamored with Hosking's longer survey). This book is significantly longer than either of them, and does a good job narrating and explaining Russian history.

A Good Introduction Lacking Depth

A very good introduction covering many aspects of Russian history that are overlooked in more general accounts, but lacking depth overall. The shifts in the second half of the book between leader-centric, cultural, and imperialist chapters became distracting. In condensing the dense subject, the author seemed to lose the ability to be a storyteller, but nevertheless enticed an interest in finding more sources for specific eras.
