About the Author

RP Ericksen holds a PhD in History and is the author of the political commentary, The Left Has Always Been Right, as well as a number of publications on German history. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, he savors a close network of family and friends, most of whom tolerate his pondering.

I like Ericksen’s poems about food

I like Ericksen’s poems about food. In “Winter’s Growth” he writes that “the larger pants I had purchased/ to accommodate growth/ grew snug,” because he had “shored up donuts/ against my ruin,” and had considered “the nicer pastries at Starbucks/ a wedge against ennui.” He also writes about his ascetic practice in Berlin, with a glass of pinot grigio and caprese salad, but his longing for the shank of pork on his neighbor’s table, with its dripping fat, thick skin, and even a few dark hairs still attached. He writes about ‘Gaining Weight in Africa” at nice hotels and safari parks, while feeling guilty about the ironies of comfort for “Western wastrels” in a continent suffering from hunger. He also ponders “edible” worms, recognizing that he is not willing to try eating them, but knowing they will someday be eating him. These variations on the subject of food are mixed in with ironic, witty, and intelligent comments on religion, sex, politics, and culture. It is a very good read.

About the Author
Nicholas Walliman is a qualified architect and Senior Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment at Oxford Brookes University and a researcher associate in the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development. After many years of practice in architecture in the UK and abroad, he returned to academic life to do his PhD. This experience raised his interest in research theory and methods, and he was subsequently asked by the university to write a distance learning course to guide postgraduate students embarking on research degrees. This course provided the raw material and incentive for writing this book. He has subsequently published several other books on research theory and methods for students and practitioners at various levels of expertise. He is currently conducting research with a team of architects and environmental scientists as part of the Oxford Brookes Institute for Sustainable Development. They are engaged in nationally and internationally funded projects on a range of aspects of building technology, such as energy saving building envelope design, mitigation of the effects of floods on buildings and advanced construction methods. He has published numerous research papers on aspects of architectural technology. He is also supervising several PhD and Masters students. Despite this emphasis on science and technology, his work with research students covers many other aspects of architecture and its relationship to society, such as vernacular architecture, the effects of westernisation, architectural education, conservation, administration and sustainable design.

I've been teaching for 20+ years, and this is one of the few items I've seen in recent years that actually made me sit up and take notice. The advice and techniques are organized and very doable. The only thing to keep in mind is that this is not a "quick" fix. The program may take 3-5 years to truly run smoothly school-wide.

This is a very structured program but it is very good for teachers still needing help designing their management system. It has some great advice, but I wish I had read the product description more closely because mine did not come with a CD as I had hoped. Since this was a seller issue I did not include it in my rating because I thought the book itself was great.
