Great book!

I'm really impressed with this book and would recommend it highly.

Back when I was teaching Digital Graphics & Animation classes here at the local high school, one of the high points of the school year was when a representative from the Art Institute of Houston would come in for the day and talk with the classes about the programs that their school offered. As part of the presentation they would show examples of some of their recent student's portfolios. Those portfolios never failed to fascinate the students and myself. Watching the different presentations over the years, I was always stuck by how they kept getting more sophisticated and creative each year.

I tried to have some of my more senior students do something similar to showcase the work that they had created the two years that they were in my classes (and the same with my CAD students) - but will limited success. That was due in some part to the limited resources that we had to work with, but also to the limited knowledge that I had on the subject. I wished I had this book back then.

This book is a huge reference source for anyone wanting to create a portfolio - and as basic primer on the art of promotion itself. I could easily see this book being used as a textbook for a class on the subject.

This is a book that is packed with a wealth of information - broken up into fifteen chapters covering everything from what a portfolio is (and why you need a good one) - to how to create different kinds of them, and concluding with what to do with one when you're done. Sprinkled throughout the book are little bits of suggestions and tips. Also there are interviews and personal profiles from various people in the design industry. At the end of most chapters there are usually two Designer's Challenges to try and highlight the topics covered in the chapter. Something else that I always found helpful as a teacher, the book also includes both a detailed index and a glossary - as well as a bibliography.

I'll be recommending this book.- both to students as well as my friends still teaching.

I Would Recommend It (but it is not the end all and be all for creating your portfolio necessarily)

In its third incarnation, Rose Myers' "Graphic Designer's Guide to Portfolio Design" gets better so I award it 4 stars.

The very toughest thing that I ever had to do while in Computer Graphics Courses from 1997-98 and (advanced) 2001-2004 was attempting to create a portfolio of my work. There is no “simple” way to do this, and as every artist or designer’s style and output is different, so too I feel the portfolio should also be…”one size does not fit all” which I believe you understand.

There is much covered here in this 300 pages of text, studded with photos, illustrations, tips, advice, and comments from professional designers. It presents a great overall view of creating a gathering and ordering of one’s work suitably for presentation to get professional results. Therein, to me, lies the largest part of the “problem”…getting through all this on your own. Not easy for a newbie, manageable for a designer of some experience. I honestly have not seen any “perfect” text for this that many can easily get through the first or second time around at it. (As I said above, personally, I found it the most difficult of jobs).

Ideally, I would say that this book is good enough to be a textbook that would be the support of a physical course in “portfolio design”. Under the physical presentation of a skilled professor or graphic technician, this book becomes a strong support in learning to create the vehicle for presentation of your work.

After reading this TOC list, just try to imagine fitting all this onto 300 pages in a manner that the majority of folks could manage to get through easily and clearly understood. This is the Crux of my notations above…a go-between (professor or tutor) helps immeasurably for the majority of folks trying to weather their way through this in a manner that is easily understood and that they can maneuver through with a sense of confidence.

Rose Myers has great knowledge, and gives much advice, showing numerous examples through illustrations…but, as I said, I do not personally or professionally feel that one text can completely present this process. I recommend this book, but further I recommend or urge the prospective Portfolio Designer locate a class or a tutor to make this process bearable to get through without pulling out all your hair or chewing your nails down into the quick!

Lastly, as with all Wiley publications that I have ever had exposure to, this volume is of excellent quality, from the dull-coated paper used for the text (no glare, important for someone staring for hours at printed pages), excellent solid perfect binding, and a durably heavy coated cover make this a text that should last the user a long time through use.

Wasn't Sure At First But Comprehensive and Detailed

I read this from the perspective of an independent graphic designer who has been running my own business for 18 years. When I began reading through this (trying hard to keep in mind the level of experience and knowledge of someone just entering the profession) I was thinking: Boy, this is pretty basic and sometimes old fashioned. Many things looked a little outdated and not as progressive as one might need in today's market. But as I continued to read, the book became not only a good way to create a portfolio but also a great textbook about some basic graphic design fundamentals.

It covers graphics programs, file types, and color modes. It really gives a lot of great detail for those who may not have had a complete education in all areas. I know one would assume that anyone in the field would understand all of these basics but it really depends on the teacher and classes they attended. If you are looking to have a more comprehensive overview of graphic design, more than you were exposed to, this may help to clarify a few basics that you should be aware of.

I have served on an advisory committee for our local career and technology center commercial design program for over 10 years. I have also helped newcomers in the industry to try and define their strengths and promote them. It still amazes me how little some graduates or newcomers know in some areas. With this in mind, this book can help to define the areas of weakness and give someone the chance to fine tune or learn more before jumping into the industry.

What is missing is a little more of the really ingenious and inventive ways that some are using to breakinto the industry. Online work, clever interactive portfolios, etc. I don't think that stationery packages are what will sell a portfolio (although they are certainly part of a corporate brand) so I would add to anyone looking for work that if you don't have a lot to display in a portfolio, ask local businesses if you can donate your services to rework or design a brochure or product of theirs to use in a portfolio. They may never print but it helps to take a real business project and make it work to the standards of a real business. It is never as easy as creating 'mock layouts' in a class because it never has to meet the personality and taste of the business owner.

So, the bottom line is that this book is worth the money. BUT be creative, be sure to know the market you are applying in. Know the competition. Sell your strengths. Display what is commercially accepted, not what is your favorite.

This book was a labor of love ... it's something I'm passionate about and a book that I really enjoyed writing. The first chapter includes Python code that everyone who uses ArcGIS should be doing - even if you don't consider yourself a programmer. Python is really that simple to learn and use and the benefit you will gain is tremendous.

Then the next chapters teach you how to write stand-alone scripts and script tools. These can be run outside ArcGIS, or included on menus and run inside ArcGIS giving you a lot of flexibility on user interaction, or even scripts that can be run unattended.

One of the coolest parts is the chapter on the ArcPy mapping module. You can control every aspect of a map layout and there's even a tutorial on building custom map books. You'll have more control and build better map books that you can using the Data Driven Pages tools in ArcMap.

I've also included TONS of hands-on tutorials and exercises because that's the best way to learn coding. The more you work with the Python scripting language, the easier it is to write more scripts. There's even some techniques I developed for making tools that can interact with your map - not typically done because scripts normally can't ask you to make selections in the map.

Chapters four and five have a very comprehensive look at Python Toolboxes and Python Add-Ins. These look very daunting when you see examples run, but I've broken each down into bite-sized chunks that are easy to understand. Follow the steps, build them piece by piece, and in the end you'll have a pretty impressive application! The data validation techniques included in the Python Toolboxes and Python Add-Ins are priceless and are a great way to steer the user to the correct processes and avoid user errors.

In addition, each tutorial has a section called "Scripting Techniques" that goes over many different techniques that are valuable to you but that I just couldn't get into the tutorials. For instance, one tutorial includes many list handling techniques that you'll practice and the Scripting Techniques sections shows many more that you may want to use in your own scripts later. There's also a Tool Index in the back that notes all the tools and topics in the book and where to find them again. This is valuable when you need to reference a tool for a custom script.

When you complete all the tutorials and exercises in this book, you can truly call yourself a Python for ArcGIS programmer!

This is Currently the Best of the Three Available Books on Python for ArcGIS

In a niche that already has two entry-level books on Python programming for ArcGIS is there a need for this book? Mr. Allen, author of several other ESRI Press books, demonstrates that writing a better book than the competition provides the answer - for "GIS Tutorial for Python Scripting" is the introductory book you should buy. The alternatives are Paul A. Zandbergen's "Python Scripting for ArcGIS" (ESRI Press, 2013) and Eric Pimpler's "Programming ArcGIS 10.1 with Python Cookbook" (Packt Publishing, 2013).

Mr. Allen takes a "workbook" approach to the subject: each chapter has worked-out examples matched with tutorials. I appreciate that when the author provides technical details he also provides a good explanation of what is going on. The essential topics - stand-alone Python scripts, Python toolboxes and Python add-ins - are covered in sufficient detail for an introductory text to give the reader a solid grounding. What distinguishes this book from the others is its superior organization, clarity of text, examples and tutorials. Though the other books cover similar material (I own them both) Allen's "GIS Tutorial for Python Scripting" is the one I recommend for those new to this subject. The data for the book is available for download at esripress.esri.com/bookresources/ and a 60-day trial of ArcGIS for Desktop software is also available. Unlike ESRI Press books of the past there is no data dvd bundled with the book. Appendix B, "The Tool Index", is another helpful feature and my first stop when using the book.

Keep in mind that all three books are introductory books. Practice using the tools will be essential for you and ArcGIS help, resources and forums will be valuable aids for your development as will many other websites found by googling the subject on the web. Debugging Python scripts for ArcGIS remains a tedious process and even here Mr. Allen makes useful suggestions to minimize the pain. Though this book is a good addition to the field I will note that this area currently lacks any intermediate books on the subject though several are in preparation by other authors.

A book with technical problems

A more rigorous approach to Python scripting than other books I've seen. The book does not teach basic Python or GIS. Users of this book must know ArcGIS and should know basic Python beforehand. Zandbergen's book: "Python Scripting for ArcGIS (PSFA)" is a good precursor to this book and if you do not know Python well I would suggest going through that book first. When this book (GIS Tutorial) brought up subjects briefly, I found it useful to refer back to Zandbergen's book for a refresher. For example the Describe() function in this book is introduced with two or three sentences, whereas in PSFA four pages are devoted to it.

This book has a Tool Index in the back, but not a subject index. They are almost the same but I think this book could be improved if they would add a general subject index. But if not, the existing tool index refers to the section in the book where a tool is discussed. It should refer to the page number instead.

Now I come to the font used for showing code. Why all the changes - even on the same page. In some cases the font starts out normal, like the other text - then it gets smaller, and then even smaller down to about 4 or 5! Good grief! If you are going to do that include one of those flat magnifying glasses with the book. I think 9 is the minimum font size in a publication. But then I ran across a case on page 73 where he did not reduce the font, just lopped off the end of some code! Very very poor editing dude.

Also, it appears to me that the writer (David Allen) might have been in a hurry to publish because there are sometimes misleading codes which made me wonder, "where did that come from?" For example, on page 50 he showed the code: fcName = "ZIPCODES_poly" and then on the next page in concluding his discussion he showed the code again but this time as: "fcName = "complan" without any explanation why it was changed. For a student that can be confusing. It makes one think, "did I miss something?" and then you find yourself rereading unnecessarily; however, later the change seemed to make sense since he was expanding his code to include other feature class names but did not bother to tell you he was doing that at first when the change was made. Such little clues make it easier to follow the logic of the reader ... and yes it adds to the book length, but at 254 pages this book is a lightweight in the computer book world and making it longer would be no problem.

His use of tutorial exercises followed by asking the reader to duplicate the tutorial with a different dataset or a different approach is a good challenge, and it is one of the things that makes the book more rigorous in that it does not hold your hand through every process and also requires the reader to review tool definitions within arcgis itself.

I kind of recommend the book, but with reservation and recommend that the "experienced novice" also have a copy of Zandbergen's book.

I know Mr. Allen can put together a good book - I studied his MODELBUILDER book, but this effort falls far short of that one. It needs going over by people with a sharp pencil and willingness to cut and paste. Here is a suggestion: combine the more advanced aspects of this book with Zandbergen's book. Be willing to make it 700 or so pages and you will have a great resource.

I originally gave this book 4 stars, but sorry I have to change it to 2 stars. It really needs going over and a major editing process.

Want to be Frustrated? Buy this Book!

The book is a poorly structured Tutorial Book. I found it difficult to understand and hard to follow.

This book is definitely not for beginners. If you’re just starting out learning Python for ArcGIS I would stay away from this book. Before beginning each tutorial there’s extensive reading to be done on ArcGIS for Desktop Help as a preparation to the information presented in the tutorials. This book is definitely not an all-inclusive Tutorial book. This additional reading could easily make this book a 500 page endeavor instead of the 288 pages shown inside the book.

The author makes very broad learning assumptions from Tutorial to Exercises. Sometimes the exercises feel like they don't coincide with the tutorials. If you don’t have previous Python experience or you are unfamiliar with using Python for Geo-processing you will struggle to get through the tutorials. There is always something new introduced in the exercise that was not covered in the tutorial. This led to a lot of frustration when trying to complete the exercises. The book is also littered with mistakes. I could not find errata available online at the time of this review.

Life Changing..........

I knew this book would be special and would change how I viewed life. That's why I didn't read it straight away but waited until I went on a special trip I had been planning for several years. This book bought me to a level of understanding that I have never encountered. An understanding of myself, my connection with the earth and a connection with a higher being. I loved the way in which the book flowed and the opportunities given to put what I had read into practice. This book is all about self discovery and reflection, bringing one to a level far more superior than just existing day to day. This book can truly change your life if you just allow / surrender!

An Exciting Journey Connecting our Soul Purpose with Divine Meaning

Life is a road we travel on sometimes with sometimes without direction. Eiman Al Zaabi through the Art of Surrender reminds us first of the importance of direction, finding that spiritual connection with the Divine and then guiding us to understand the meaning and importance of surrender in making that connection, finding ourselves, and understanding and aligning with our Divine purpose. What great power we hold within ourselves when we surrender and align our spirit with our Divine purpose. This book provides an understanding of the world we live in, the physical and spiritual components of being with tools and techniques to help us discover our inner selves the powerful spiritual side. Eiman's own personal life experience moving toward surrender add a special dimension helping the reader understand and move toward the spiritual dimension of our lives. A must read for connecting with our life purpose and connecting with the Divine.

Gentle and Profound Wisdom

I am so grateful to have found this book. I read many books that discuss spiritual paths so it is a true delight to come across a book with as much wisdom and clarity as "The Art of Surrender." At first I began to skim through the book as I am apt to do, but found myself wanting to return to the opening pages and read it more thoroughly from beginning to end. I did not want to miss anything. What attracted me was not just the profound thoughts being expressed but the manner in which those thoughts were expressed. The author has a gentle, peaceful way of self-expression that I was drawn to the tone of the book as much as I was drawn to the content. You get a true sense that the author is authentic; that she lives what she writes which makes her ideas and concepts even more compelling. More remarkable to me, the author is a young woman but her words suggest she is an old soul. If you seek to move closer to the Divine this book may give you a certain clarity to help you on your journey. It is truly a remarkable book. I hope to read more of this author's works in the coming years.

About the Author
Douglas Brooks has a B.S./E.E. and an M.S./E.E. from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. He has had forty years of experience in the electronics industry, ranging from circuit design engineer on the space program to president of his own manufacturing company. For the past twenty years he has been president of UltraCAD Design, Inc., a premier PCB Design Service Bureau in the Pacific Northwest.

Brooks has published hundreds of articles during his career. In the last twenty years, these articles have appeared in PCB Design Magazine, on Iconnect007’s websites, on Mentor Graphics’ web pages, and on UltraCAD’s web pages. In 2003, he published the book Signal Integrity Issues and Printed Circuit Board Design (Prentice Hall).

Brooks served on the faculty of San Diego State University for three years and was a visiting associate professor at the University of Washington for one year. He has given numerous seminars on Signal Integrity Issues in PCB Design over the past fifteen years all over the United States and in Moscow, Beijing and Shanghai, Taiwan, Japan, and Australia.

Brooks finally retired in 2012.

A good introduction to electronics for PCB designers and technicians

The Book Description is an accurate representation of this book. As a degreed and practicing engineer I found about 2/3rds of this book to be mostly rudimentary coverage of electronic components and circuit theory. That said, the author has an engaging and clear writing style and covers the material in detail. A technician or PCB designer with little formal electronics training should be able to learn a lot of key concepts from his presentation. The final third of the book will be of more use to engineers, particularly those who are less experienced in high-speed PCB design, as this is where the author gets into the details of crosstalk, ground bounce, reflections, via inductance and other practical high-speed PCB design issues. Like the rest of the book the writing is clear, concise and informative. I also have Bogatin's Signal and Power Integrity: Simplified book in the same series, and recommend that book if you need greater depth and more theory and the math that goes with it. Still, I found tidbits of information in here that I didn't know before, such as the recent experiments in trace current heating that caused the IPC to revise their trace current standard recently (and thereby proving a number of online calculators wrong.)

The author keeps his promise of keeping the math light and accessible, other than for three pages in the appendix where he briefly expounds on Maxwell's Equations, complete with their vectors and surface integrals. So don't panic if page 304 is the first page you turn to.

To be fair, this book isn't directed at engineers such as myself so I won't rate it as if it was. As I noted above the author is an excellent writer and does a great job of explaining electronics to a depth necessary for PCB design, and his material on high-speed PCB design is much more accessible than the more detailed but denser works such as those by Howard Johnson. I did take off one star because the author plugged his UltraCAD Design firm's software a little more than I like, particularly given the price of this book and the fact that being a Linux user I find his Visual Basic software to be of no use.

About the Author
Haakon Fossen is Professor of Structural Geology at the University of Bergen, Norway, where he is affiliated with the Department of Earth Science and the Natural History Collections. His professional career has involved work as an exploration and production geologist/geophysicist for Statoil and as a Professor at the University of Bergen (1996 to present), in addition to periods of geologic mapping and mineral exploration in Norway. His research ranges from hard to soft rocks and includes studies of folds, shear zones, formation and collapse of orogenic belts, numerical modelling of deformation (transpression), the evolution of rifts, and studies of deformed porous sandstones. He has conducted extensive field work in various parts of the world, notably Norway, the Western United States, Sinai, and Brazil, and his research is based on field mapping, microscopy, physical and numerical modelling, geochronology, and seismic interpretation. Professor Fossen has been involved in editing several international geology journals, has authored over 100 scientific publications, and has written two other books and several book chapters. He holds the first Nordic Geoscientist Award and the Outstanding Paper Award (together with Basil Tikoff) of the Structural Geology and Tectonics Division of the Geological Society of America, of which he is also a Fellow. He has taught undergraduate structural geology courses and graduate and industry structural geology field courses for over twenty years and has a keen interest in developing electronic teaching resources to aid student visualization and understanding of geological structures.
