an emergency handbook

The'Handbook of Emergency Psychiatry' by Khouzam, Tan and Gill, is indeed an emergency handbook. The way the topics are presented and discussed make it a very easy reference even in an emergency setting. It is concise yet covers fine details needed to differentiate various psychiatric problems with similar presenting symptoms. Among other things, the use of mnemonics and illustrations make the book stand out.
As a nurse in a geriatric setting, I should say this is a must have book in nurses' stations. In skilled nursing facilities, "Psychiatric emergencies" occur almost in a daily basis and the nurses and social workers have to deal with primary care physicians with treatment approaches. Having this book is the best thing in the absence of a Psychiatrist. I sincerely thank the authors for their efforts.

Se trata de un texto muy introductorio a los conceptos de psiquiatría de urgencias. En general el contenido de los capítulos es poco práctico, superficial y muy desactualizado. Faltan aspectos importantes sobre el manejo de la inmovilización, sedación parenteral, uso apropiado de benzodiacepinas y evaluación adecuada del paciente con riesgo suicida. Presenta algunas figuras que nada aportan al texto. Resulta MUY COSTOSO para lo poco que ofrece.
