About the Author

K.C. Raveendranathan obtained his BSc (Engg.) in electronics and communications engineering with distinction from the College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET), in 1984. He worked in Bharat Electronics Limited, Bangalore, from 1985 to 1988, where he was involved in the design and development of MW transmitters for Prasar Bharathi. His first book, 1/0 Solutions to Everyday Problems in Science and Engineering, a philosophical work published in the late 1980s, was well accepted by academia. He joined CET in June 1988 as a lecturer in electronics and communication engineering. He obtained his masters in engineering (ME) from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1993, specializing in optical/computer communications. Presently, he is working as a professor at the Government Engineering College Barton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram. He has presented/published over 15 papers in national and international conferences and journals and guided over a dozen UG projects and seven M.Tech. theses. His research interests include digital signal processing, wireless communication, fuzzy logic, next-generation computing and simulation techniques. He is a life member of ISTE, life fellow of IE (India) and IETE, and a senior member of the IEEE.

Agree With the Group---It Beats Thinking

This author takes Gustave LeBon's work on crowds and expands it to groups other than lower class people aroused by demagogues. He writes that groups (he calls them "crowds", after LeBon) are found in all milieu of society, and are comprised of people who want/need to have others do their thinking for them. It's a complicated world, so why not tune in to any source of partly-correct and limited information that "seems right" and go with that?

He gets into psychology, stating that people who invest uncritically in a "crowd" show latent infancy, with the crowd serving as the substitute guiding parent. He maintains that one crowd ousting another results only in the winning crowd imposing (with mixed results) its world-view, limited as it is in scope and truth, on everyone. I read 3/4 of the book, since the remainder seemed to be elaboration that I did not need.

The content of the book is outstanding. It describes the situation in modern society and the inability of change to be implemented. The physical book itself is simply a copy of an original print edition and is done at a reduced size making it cheaper for whoever printed it up :(

The second part deals with the application of hydrodynamic cavitation effects to advanced oxidation of substances that pollute the natural environment. Results of laboratory experiments on the application of cavitation effects to decompose selected organic compounds which hardly undergo biodegradation are presented, as well as a concept of the cavitation phenomenon application on an industrial scale.

About the Author

Janusz Ozonek, a graduate of Silesian Technical University in Gliwice was specializing in the scope of chemical engineering in the fields close to the problems of environmental protection. After the studies he worked in the following research institutes: Inorganic Chemistry Research Institute in Gliwice and Organic Industry Institute in Warsaw. For the next 8 years he worked in the industry in the Company of Chemical Reagents in Lublin.
He has been connected with Lublin University of Technology since 1980. In this University he started an intensive research on the ozone synthesis process and improvement of the phenomenological description for this process in the plasma-chemical reactor. The research constituted the basis for the doctoral dissertation, defended at the Chemical Department of the Silesian Technical University in Gliwice. The development of the model of temperature distribution in the ozonizer depending on the hydrodynamic parameters and power supply was also an important achievement resulting from the conducted research.
Most of the works of Janusz Ozonek are interdisciplinary. The chemical ozone synthesis process itself, along with running the processes in the environment of low-temperature plasma require an approach from the side of physical elementary processes and is purposeful for the environmental engineering.
Janusz Ozonek is an author or co-author of 5 books, over 40 papers published in technical magazines and over 80 papers presented on the scientific and technical symposiums and conferences both national and international. The subject of the papers is focusing on environmental protection and is mainly connected with the issue of reducing the energy consumption in the process of ozone synthesis and its usage in eco-technologies.
He is a member of the International Ozone Association, a member of the Committee of Low-Temperature Plasma Chemistry of the Lublin department of the Polish Academy of Sciences, a member-correspondent of Lublin Science Society and a member of Polish Chemical Society.

Doctor, I am so glad you have read this, I have chronic DP/DR

I have struggled with this from childhood and have fought my way through the mental health system for about 35 years. I am now 50. I thought I was one of about 4 people in the world who had this, per SO many professionals, until the internet, when all of us came out of the woodwork to see we were not alone.

I am furious with the medical profession, and tremendously grateful for Dr. Sierra's work. I beg that all mental health professionals become aware of this, ASAP.

If I could I would buy copies for every psychiatrist/therapist I've ever seen who "doesn't get it" or those who have told me to "get over it." Medical residents have absolutely no clue about it though it is a common symptom of panic attacks. Neurologists are very informed about DP/DR. What happened to the study of neurology in psychiatry? One current medical resident who has seen me doesn't even understand what deja-vu is. How is that possible?

I'm sorry I am so angry, but now feel vindicated. Again thank you Dr. Sierra for your tireless efforts. For the first time in my life I have a grain of hope that all DP/DR sufferers will not be neglected or dismissed any more. I was thrilled when "Feeling Unreal" came out, but I feel this will have a far greater impact on the medical community, PLEASE.

Also, all psychiatrists out there -- anti-psychotics may help some of us, but in many cases (including my own) they can cause DP/DR to become unbearable.

The best book yet on depersonalization

Depersonalization is a symptom that is completely private; it has no observable signs. During chronic depersonalization, one's emotional connection to body, self, and world vanishes. One's normal background sense of aliveness is replaced with a pervasive, muzzy numbness. One feels distant and disconnected from one's thoughts, actions, emotional reactions, and body sensations -- indeed, from everything that one is experiencing. This is a very unpleasant state.

Although depersonalization is the third most common psychiatric symptom (after anxiety and depression), it has received little attention until recently. At present, there are two major depersonalization research teams -- one in New York and the other in London. This book is written by the leader of the London team at King's College's Institute of Psychiatry -- Mauricio Sierra. Dr. Sierra is probably the world's leading scholar and researcher of depersonalization.

The prevalence of depersonalization disorder (DPD), the most chronic and severe form of depersonalization, is about 1%. Although this prevalence is comparable to that of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, DPD is sorely under-diagnosed (Read: routinely misdiagnosed). The average person with DPD spends 12 years in the mental health system before receiving the correct diagnosis. Sierra attributes this to three factors. First, "most psychiatrists are still trained to believe that depersonalization disorder is extremely rare or non-existent" (p. 3). Second, psychiatrists' standard mental status examination contains no questions about depersonalization. Third, persons with DPD have difficulty describing their peculiar experiences and are often reluctant to disclose them (for fear of being thought to be 'crazy').

The onset of depersonalization disorder typically occurs during adolescence. It is usually chronic and is frequently associated with other psychiatric disorders (especially panic disorder and social anxiety disorder). Its most frequent predisposing factors and triggers are acute stress or trauma, illicit use of certain drugs, the presence of an anxiety disorder, and a childhood history of emotional abuse.

DPD has long been thought to be substantially untreatable. Sierra, however, provides a detailed description of the ways that DPD is beginning to respond to both psychotherapy and medication. Clearly, Sierra intends this book for clinicians and researchers. It is an excellent book that advances the field.

Finally, although this book is not aimed at those who suffer from DPD, the book may be of considerable interest to them as well. Depersonalization:A New Look at a Neglected Syndrome

I am a trained and Board Certified (in the US) Psychiatrist, with 11 years of experience. I was shocked to see that Depersonalization Disorder is such a common syndrome, and one about which so much is known, as Dr. Sierra, a true expert in the topic, brilliantly explains, in this "little" gem of a book (it can easily be read in a week or less). His knowledge about the syndrome is wide and deep. His respect for the topic and the reader are evident throughout the book, in things such as how well referenced, how clear and easy to read, and how up to date it is. From epidemiology to diagnosis, from neurobiology to pharmacological and psychotherapeutic approaches, everything you want to know (and more) about Depersonalization is here. The other shocking thing is to see how truly neglected (as the title says) this syndrome has been. Thanks to this book, I will now have Depersoalization more present when I am doing my diagnostic evaluations. This book is another proof (as if more were needed) that it behooves American and European Psychiatries to communicate more and to learn more from each other(some of that is already happening, increasingly so).

About the Author

Michael Tribe is a development economist whose principal overseas research, consultancy and teaching experience has been in sub-Saharan Africa, in Uganda and Ghana in particular, over four decades. He has been the Honorary Secretary of the UK and Ireland Development Studies Association since 2000.

Frederick Nixson is Emeritus Professor of Development Economics at the University of Manchester. His research interests span macroeconomic policy, aid, industrialisation strategies and experiences, privatisation, the Asian transitional economies and poverty.

Andy Sumner is a fellow of the Vulnerability and Poverty Research Team at the Institute of Development Studies. He is a cross-disciplinary economist with primary foci of interest in child poverty and wellbeing; poverty indicators, concepts, methods, approaches; and the politics of policy processes.

About the Author

Sonia Nieto

Sonia Nieto is Professor Emerita of Language, Literacy, and Culture, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has taught students at all levels from elementary through graduate school and she continues to speak and write on multicultural education, the education of Latinos, and other culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. Other books include The Light in Their Eyes: Creating Multicultural Learning Communities (2010, 2nd ed), What Keeps Teachers Going? (2003), and two edited volumes, Puerto Rican Students in U.S. Schools (2000) and Why We Teach (2005). She has received many awards for her research, advocacy, and activism, including an Annenberg Institute Senior Fellowship (1998–2000), the Outstanding Language Arts Educator of the Year from the National Council of Teachers of English (2005), the Social Justice Education Award from the American Educational Research Association (2008), and honorary doctorates from Lesley University (1999), Bridgewater State University (2004), DePaul University (2007), and Manhattanville College (2009).

 

Patty Bode

Patty Bode is the Director of Art Education for Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her research interests include multicultural theory and practice in teacher preparation, the arts in urban education, and the role of visual culture in the expression of student knowledge. She has published and lectured on retheorizing identity and curriculum, redefining multicultural education, and critical art pedagogy. Years of experience as an activist public school teacher and teacher educator inform her art making, research, and teaching. She has received awards for efforts in anti-racist curriculum reform and bridging theory and practice in multicultural education, including the 2010 Art Educator of the Year for Higher Education of the Eastern USA Region by the National Art Education Association, the Massachusetts 2010 Art Educator of the Year for Higher Education by the Massachusetts Art Education Association, and 2005 Multicultural Educator of the Year Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education.

Redundant, dry, and sesquipedalian

This book is very dry, redundant, and unnecessarily sesquipedalian (a funny word meaning 'uses big words'). The text was required for a class, and I was lucky enough to pass the class using only the index and reading a single chapter. The case studies are fairly interesting. They were the best parts of the book. Sadly the best parts of the book were written by the teenagers in each case study and not the author. I would not recommend this book.

I had to purchase this book for a graduate class on equality in education. One of the strong points of this textbook is that it examines the sociopolitical context of education. Education does not exist in a vacuum--it is often determined by cultural and social pressures, and it is often steered by politicians. I really enjoyed that aspect of the text.
However, the authors made several unsubstantiated claims in the text--most were minority-oriented. They would write about the educational minority disadvantage and discuss several aspects of it, but most were just statements unsubstantiated by any facts or studies. I have a difficult time believing some of their conclusions simply because they had no evidence to back them up in their claims. I know there have been plenty of studies on these topics, and much research has been done on minority disadvantage; however, I am not sure of the scope of these problems. Therefore, some additional research presented in the text would have helped me understand and agree with their conclusions.

This textbook does a great job of covering a wide array of topics that are necessary to learn as an educator teaching children from different backgrounds, races, and cultures. I took off one star because the chapters often drag on for longer than is necessary.

Great gift

Bought this as part of a gift for my girlfriend about a month ago and have had a fun time with it. There are some pretty neat activities to do. We just did a couple pages today and found ourselves laughing constantly. I would say its better for young adults than older though. Would buy again....its worth the money =)

Lots of drawing

This book is cute and my boyfriend and I have enjoyed it but be warned that there are lots of drawing activities and if you're not into that then you'll get bored with this quickly. I'm a sucky artist so I've been skipping over the drawing activities.

cute n sweet.

very fun and light activity book for a rainy day or just because. I found it funny and entertaining and its a good keepsake to look back on. (a nice book if you want to do something with your significant other and not get into any arguments because of the content of the questions) Very light and upbeat questions.
