Surprisingly good romance.

When I read the synopsis of this novel and some of its reviews, I hesitated to download it. It sounded too angsty with somewhat unbelievable cruelty on the part of the husband. But then the book kept on getting more and more favorable reviews and I figured it was worth trying out.

I'm glad I did. This is angsty and I still felt the hero had been unbelievably cruel at the beginning of the marriage, but the growth of their relationship was romantic, sweet and hot and sometimes tense, and had some really heart-wrenching moments. See if you can read without being moved the big scene at the beginning of the story when the wife has finally had enough and explodes, verbally and physically, at her husband. There are some powerfully emotional moments in this story.

There were some frustrating moments also. Yes, the husband does start to see the error of his ways and try to improve the relationship, but I think more in-depth conversations about everything troubling the wife would have been in order earlier on. It takes until the last pages of the book (and that's maybe 10 or 11 months of relationship mending) for everything to be clarified.

There are some repetitive scenes when the husband and wife are trying to communicate better with each other where they seem to be just going in circles and some editing issues with the book itself, but, in general, this romance is worth the read and I would not hesitate to read another novel by this author in the future.

Excellent Angsty Read

This is one of the better books I have read recently. Coming from an unknown, self-published author, I was not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised, however.

The Hero treats the heroine horribly and she decides to leave him. What follows are 10 months of the Hero trying to convince the h he changed and the h just not buying it. He realizes what a horrible person he has been and shows the heroine a new, better man.

The only real improvement would have been if we had a bit of the Hero's perspective.

For .99 this book is a steal. I highly recommend it.

If you used to read Harlequins and sometimes wondered how the doucheb*g alpha hero could be redeemed into someone that you could see the heroine forgive and put up with, then you should read this book.

In this book the Hero hurts the heroine who adores him because he's put in a position not of his choice. The best part is she doesn't put up with it forever, she has enough and she wants out, by which time the hero's eyes are opened and he does spare no effort into convincing her that he is sorry and showing her that he loves her.

I like that his actions do reflect his words.

A consistent sweet read and plus points to the heroine while being vulnerable and staying non-bitter still stood up for herself!!

I will be checking out other works of this author.

Born in Saffron Waldon, Essex, Gordon Jacob was one of the most musically conservative of his generation of composers. Alice and Jade Starmore are a mother-and-daughter knitwear design team from Scotland. Alice has to her credit more than half a dozen knitting books, including the popular Aran Knitting (LJ 8/97). This latest book is an enchanting collection of designs for ten hand-knitted garments for children aged two to nine. Each pattern includes an introductory excerpt from a classic of children's literature, full-page photographs of a child wearing the finished garment, and a clearly presented pattern with written instructions, a schematic, and charted designs. Interspersed with the patterns are tips and techniques illustrated with large line drawings. Warmly recommended for public libraries where demand for children's patterns warrants.

A Must-Add to Your Knitting Library!

First off, I'll admit to significant bias, as I am a huge Starmore fan. That aside, this pattern book is one of the Starmore team's best, and is a worthy addition to a knitting library (even one, like mine, already stocked with every Debbie Bliss book). I won't begin to confess how many projects' worth of yarn I have stockpiled already, and yet it was all I could do not to run out TODAY and acquire more for several projects in this book. Some knitters will recognize a few previously published patterns for grown-ups, resized for children highly successfully (Sand Dollar from the now out-of-print Pacific Coast Highway, for example, finally makes sense as a young girl's sweater dress). Others are wholly new and as exquisite as anything we've ever seen from these designers. (Secret Garden is next on my "yarn to buy" list.) As a mother of two boys and aunt of two nieces, I also was pleased to see a nice balance between feminine, masculine and unisex patterns. All in all, a fabulous treat for knitters with children anywhere in their life!

Another Beautiful Knitting Book from Alice and Jade Starmore

Every book I have by Alice or Jade Starmore is beautiful. This is no exception. The book itself is luscious and the patterns are to die for.

Most of the patterns are for arans and Fair Isles but there are some simpler knits for beginners. This makes it a great book for knitters of all levels.

When I purchase a knitting book I ask myself three questions:

1) Does the book contain patterns that I want to knit?

2) Are the patterns easy to read?

3) Is the book a good resource.

The answer to all of these questions is 'Yes'. If I had the time I would knit every pattern in this book!

Alice Starmore yarn is no longer made but good substitutions are Jamieson, Simply Knit or Rowan.

This book is one you'll want to look at again and again. It provides beauty and inspiration each time you open it up.

Beautiful Starmore patterns and colors

I knew nothing of legendary Alice Starmore until I read about her in Adrienne Martini's book Sweater Quest. About the same time, I had gone to a girlfriend gathering where we all sat around together and finished our recent sewing projects, talked, and snacked. Two of the girls brought knitting projects and I became inspired to relearn the knitting process I had been taught as a child. Gradually I became fascinated with the craft and can't seem to get enough history, blogs, shared information. Starmore's patterns are beautiful, colorful, and very detailed. Starmore's designs are in the expert level of the knitting universe, but to take in her work and her ideas, is very satisfying. I haven't tried any of her designs, I'm at the contemplating stage. Her books are out of print, so they must be sought on resale sites. The Children's Collection is charmingly written, each project introduced with a poem and showcased with photos shot in breathtaking scenery. Love it!
