Refreshingly original and sure to have wide appeal
By KidsReads
Adam, Lewis, Emily and Finn pride themselves on their high-tech talents, each with his or her own area of expertise. Together they are the Trackers, able to infiltrate and find anything and anybody. They catch the attentions of a top-secret group called the Internet Security Directive, or ISD, led by a man named Lazlo with the help of teen genius Zara. They want the Trackers to work with them to catch Shantorian, a super-villain who is determined to shut down the Internet. As a cover to placate their parents, the Trackers say they've been invited to a special summer camp, before moving into a deserted hanger to start their training.
But something goes terribly wrong, and the Trackers find themselves held for questioning by the FBI, who is convinced that they are responsible for stealing four billion dollars from the system. Adam sets out to prove their innocence with the help of video evidence. The minutes tick by as the other Trackers sit in solitary confinement, and Agent Ganz drills Adam with questions.
Adam is cool and confident, taking his time in answering the tough questions. He knows they are innocent; he just has to convince Agent Ganz of the truth. The hardest part to tell is when the Trackers start falling apart. Something suspicious is happening at their headquarters, where a mole is among then. But who? Emily is getting friendly with Zara, whereas before, they eyed each other with distrust. Lewis is spending a lot of time by himself, and then he leaves altogether. Suspicions start flying and trust begins to crumble. If Adam can't depend on his fellow Trackers, then whom can he believe in?
The second book in Patrick Carman's awesome series follows the same unique pattern as the first, with the entire story centering on the interrogation of Adam by the FBI. Interspersed throughout are video clips supplied by Adam to help clear the Trackers' name. All this footage is available to view online, but if a computer isn't accessible to the reader at the time, written transcripts of the videos are printed in the appendix at the back of the book. Due to the nature of the story, there isn't a lot of time or space spent on non-essential details or excess description. This keeps the plot moving fast by centering on the important action. The breakdown of trust among the Trackers adds intriguing tension, and the unknown identity of the shadowy Shantorian adds some captivating mystery. Humor slips in now and then to spice up the story, like Adam's clever handling of Agent Ganz.
Trackers is a refreshingly original concept that may catch the interests of reluctant reader computer buffs, along with the more traditional reading fans.
